To current students: Bittorent

Do you guys torrent on campus? does CIT track you guys down? let me know! there's a movie I really wanna download!

Bring your phone with you, tether/torrent with it.
Problem solved. :D

But, I do also want to know - bump!

I’m pretty sure they can track torrenting, but there’s always DC++.

Cornell won’t specifically track you, but RIAA and MPAA will track down illegally downloaded or shared materials. If they send Cornell a notice about the file, Cornell will match that information to who downloaded the material and send you a DMCA notice. This cuts off your internet access until you deal with the situation, and sometimes forces you to pay to take a copyright education class, depending on the offense. Thus, torrenting on campus is pretty risky.

See: [CIT: Filesharing - Frequently Asked Questios](<a href=“IT@Cornell | Services and Support”>IT@Cornell | Services and Support)
and [CIT: Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA)](<a href=“IT@Cornell | Services and Support”>IT@Cornell | Services and Support)

There’s no way for the RIAA/MPAA or anyone else that would send these takedown notices to see files shared only within Cornell’s network. This makes Cornell’s internal DC++ hub ([Cornell DC++ Setup Guide](http://www.cornelldc.com/)) pretty popular and much safer.

The bandwidth limit prevents torrents like BitTorrent. I had mine on for a week (I didn’t even notice) seeding things and before I knew it, I owed over 100 dollars

On that note, ansar, that’s around 100 GB over the limit - this from a previous thread where someone gave the rate per KB over (and I calculated it to be around 1 dollar per GB).
Good bandwith and speed. Yay!

What’s the typical connection speed at Cornell?

It’s pretty fast; I just did a speed test and got around 65Mbps download / 40Mbps upload.

Also, the current billing rate is $0.0015/MB for anything greater than 20GB.

Multiply that by a thousand and there’s my predicted $1/GB (it’s a little more than that, obviously). Good speeds… Nice, nice.

20 gb is plenty
