Neither score will keep your child out of a college.
Hello again Folks - I have another question for you - as stated previously, we completed the FAFSA and CSS profiles (where applicable) last week. Not it appears that each of the schools that my S is applying to, needs hard copies of the tax returns for 2015 - so my question to all of you is
I filed electronically - therefore I don’t really have a return that has a signature on it - does this matter?
Secondly, is it prudent to redact the SSN’s for all family members in the Tax return? I think 8 of the nine colleges have an online method of submission.
We printed ours out and sent them and I did take a sharpie to extra ss numbers.
Yes, you should sign them (many schools will request an original signature not one that has been copied), even it you sent them with an electronic signature.
I think I have heard people say that they printed the tax return from the pdf save file of the return and then signed it.
Are only the CSS profile schools asking for this?
I thought for FAFSA schools using the DRT (data retrieval tool) in FAFSA to import tax return was enough.
@mommdc - apparently, 8 out of the 9 schools ask that the returns be sent in - online. This is in addition to the DRT that has already been tied into the FAFSA.
I printed out the last page of the return, signed it, scanned it, added it back to the return’s other pages and sent it all in electronically to idoc as a PDF file.
@OHMomof2 - Thanks - yes, that is what I will end up doing after redacting all SS#'s on the return.
There are plenty of Profile schools that do NOT use IDOC.
You need to do what the college is requesting. If the college financial aid department is requesting copies of your tax return, then send them a signed copy…but first find out if they want the whole thing including the schedules…or what.
In addition, sure, cross out that SS if you want to, but remember, the college already has yoir SS number via the IRS DRT. And they have your kid’s too.
@thumper1 - yes agreed. Redacting the SS# is relevant and especially if I was being asked to mail or fax in the return.
Obviously. I only have one college to send anything to now and it uses idoc, but clearly you do whatever your own schools want you to do.
Update on IDOC - we submitted the required docs (W2’s, 1040 and 1099) via IDOC - and one of the point on the list of instructions specifically stated that the Owner’s SS# should be visible on all docs. So no red-acting
