S has one BFA MT acceptance so far. He can put in a refundable deposit to hold his space and get an advantage of early housing request. We’re tempted to go ahead, knowing we can cancel by 5/1, however don’t know if we really need to do this or should wait until we see what other offers come in…
It seems a little early to be putting a deposit down. (This mostly comes up in April when people are WL’d, but want to make sure that they have an alternative if the WL doesn’t come through.) However, if you have unlimited money and are really concerned about which dorm your kid ends up in…why not?
@Dankadon one of my D’s schools has a first come first serve basis for housing, so we put the housing deposit down right away. As you said, its refundable. The other schools dont open housing till April so hopefully she knows which one is her choice by then. So if it is a true top choice or two and it gets you better housing why not?
@Jkellynh17 - it’s only $150 so I don’t consider that “unlimited money.” and yes he doesn’t want so stay in the Typical residence hall… @Joyfulmama - thank you! I’m mostly worried about how difficult the process is to cancel it if he wishes to…
$150 doesn’t seem like that much for peace of mind- esp if refundable. Certainly a drop in the bucket of college fees…
@Dankadon I dont think its difficult, people do this all the time to hold spots. I would have done it for all her top three but those schools dont open the housing till April so no need.
Oh, okay, $150 seems reasonable. Our housing deposit was $500 and non refundable.
