SAT: 1510 (750 english, 760 math), GPA: 3.73
Just based on those basic stats, and because I really don’t want to take any subject tests, should I take math 2 and Biology if I’m applying for the Econ/Math major? I’m signed up at the moment, but I’m beyond wits end trying to balance studying and finishing applications for UC’s and privates. Any help?
Ok, so they aren’t required at USC, so you don’t have to take them, but should you is the question…if you were an engineering major, I would say 100% yes. One math and one science. But you are applying to econ/math…tbh, I would take the math subject test, but scrap the bio test and put that time and effort to your apps. I am thinking with a 760 math score, you will rock the subject test with little effort (but give it a bit). Just don’t stress it. If you score great, send it in, if not, don’t. At a minimum, commit to showing up on Saturday and taking the math test, even if you have no time to spare to study for it. It’s just a hour on a Saturday.
With the competitive nature of apps these days, even though the scores aren’t required, a good score may be the thing that gives an extra little gold star or check mark on your app - a little thing that just may set it apart from someone that has almost an identical app to you, but didn’t take the test. It could also compensate a bit for a lower gpa. I really don’t think the bio test score would mean enough to make a difference given your major plans. The trade off of time to prepare for that one probably isn’t worth it.
If you don’t take it and don’t get in, you will always wonder if it would have made a difference. If a school is in the top few of your list - do everything you can to get in - no regrets that way.
Meant to ask - I assume you are applying by the Jan deadline rather than the December 1st deadline? (Since you wouldn’t have scores back in time for Dec.) Also, heed the warnings and don’t wait until last day to submit UC app, try to do it Thanksgiving weekend if you can. Servers have been known to crash and if app isn’t in, app isn’t in. Take a deep breath, you will get through this and good luck!
