parent2noles and others, my son has heard about the negative rep that engineering has at FSU and doesn’t want to apply. He is a junior, 4.0 uwgpa, and wants to major in mechanical engineering. He is planning on applying to UF, UCF. I would like to pass along some info from you about engineering at FSU so that maybe he will apply there. I would like to hear more if you please so at least he would apply.

If your son gets accepted to UF then that’s where he needs to go for engineering.

In general, ignoring the best fit concept and all that, UF would be a better choice for engineering than Florida State. Other majors would go differently. However, it is very reasonable to assume that if your child is accepted to FSU engineering he/she will have every chance to succeed and advance in that career in that department.

Goufgators was quite right when he said solid grades in undergraduate engineering at FSU and a good GRE score could get a student into UF (or Georgia Tech, MIT or anywhere, for that matter) for advanced study in that discipline.

I have already written in the FSU section that the joint FAMU-FSU College of Engineering is a priority for both FSU and FAMU and that the student will only benefit from that emphasis.

jankrav: My son applied to UF and UCF for aerospace engineering (with the possibility of doing the 5 year master’s in mechanical, too). Really, not having heard anything too positive about the FSU/FAMU engineering school, my son chose not to apply there. It is not that we dislike FSU, as my daughter is a graduate from there. He will be attending UF, but his second choice would have been UCF’s engineering school. Both UF & UCF are very different, and your son should visit all three schools to see which one he likes best.

^ The thing about FSU is that they do not like to hype themselves. It’s almost like they are allegic to this concept. The Public Relations are horrible at FSU, and UCF seems to blow the doors off them in this department.

They really should give up that whole southern thing too (they are in the ACC and not the SEC btw)…

The Demographic in Florida have changed. Keep the historical heritage, but evolve with the times. Just my honest opinion (and do not mean to offend the gentlemen from the co-flagship).

We just think it pushes the limits of truthfulness. ;)

Smilemaker, don’t forget USF for your daughter, USF might be a good fit. USF offers chemical/biomedical engineering degrees. USF also has an established medical college and is affiliated with many area hospitals. Too, metro Tampa (3 million population) has hundreds of companies that manufacture medical products. Plus, your daughter can use the bright futures and Fl prepaid.

Actually, SSobick…you are right. I am one FSU alumnus who is repulsed by the total trash I read on this board at times and am here to help set the record straight. I have written to the FSU administration about this and have seen some better effort at PR.

They could still do better.

UCF continues to blow the doors off FSU getting horrible publicity. Now some UCF students are blaming the UCF test scandal on the professor because he was too lazy to create exams himself?
