Too early to visit?

My daughter will be a 10th grader in high school this fall. She is definitely going to apply to Missouri in the future. Is it too early for her to make a visit? We live in Oregon and would like to take a trip out to Missouri in early November because she has almost an entire week off due to end of semester/veterans day/teacher in service days.

I notice that you started a thread about visiting colleges and got some good responses. We did college trips in junior year, and that was soon enough for my son. If you decide to visit Mizzou, note that Thanksgiving break is a week long, so the campus would be deserted then. We felt that, when possible, it was better to visit when students were on campus.

Thank you for very much your response. If we go, it will be November 11,12 so it is before Thanksgiving. With her very intense Junior year schedule, and all of the testing, it would be easier for us to go this coming fall. :)

I think early sophomore year is too early to be thinking about college because it’s nearly impossible to fully tell what your daughter will want from a college yet due to changing interests, but to each his/her own. My only advice is to make sure your daughter doesn’t get too fixated on Mizzou if she really likes it because she needs to make sure she has an open mind when she fully immerses herself in the college search process come junior year. Mizzou’s campus is nice enough that she could do that.

I completely agree with steeler on this one. Sophomore year’s pretty early to make any decisions, but if it’s the only time you can visit–might as well! I don’t know if you planned on incorporating a weekend into that trip, but November football’s some of Mizzou’s best. If you’re in town for a Saturday morning, definitely get tickets and go to the game!

You’ll have a blast I’m sure. Enjoy your visit! Good luck this year!

I’d recommend waiting until the summer between Junior/Senior year to start looking at colleges. Get a list of like 4-5 colleges you want to check out. Tour them that summer and into the fall of senior year. That way you will know much more about what you want out of your colleges when you’re visiting.

Agreed that the summer between Junior/Senior is the best time, but we did take the Junior year to look and narrow down colleges. But…if it’s the only time, I totally get being far away!! We had a great time in Columbia, so no matter what it’s still a nice place for a family visit.

I would not tour many campuses in the summer. It is better to tour while regular classes are in session and you can get a real feel for what it is like to be a student. Yes, summer classes are usually held, but it is not the same feel. Your ability to sit in on a class that interests you may be limited. One option is to tour during your Junior Spring Break, if the schools are in session. Good luck!

aashad-go for it. If your junior year will be anything like ours, take advantage of the time. At least you can see the school and get a “vibe” of the campus, neighborhood, surrounding community, and can rule in or out. Especially coming from Oregon. It is a long trek to visit other schools. We are in New Orleans, and while in Chicago, took the opportunity to drive up to Milwaukee to visit Marquette, son’s main interest. Glad to see the campus and the neighborhood, so can have our own opinions about safety, surrounding area. Saw some students in the summer, but would have liked to have seen more.

Here we are, summer between junior and senior year, and that’s the only visit we made. Junior year was filled with testing. Summer has been filled with mandatory 100 hour service project and now a summer program that was too good to turn down.

So, we’re starting senior year with one visit under our belt, and scrambling for info. Especially since we’re hoping for scholarships and thus need to apply early.

Swim season runs from beginning of school year until Thanksgiving, so no break there.

Anyway, we’ve decided to do some local, close by schools on weekends, and wait for acceptance and award letters for the far away ones.

Why am I posting this on Mizzou’s forum?

Because we just got a tip about the school and are looking at their website and seeing a variety of programs that son may want to do.

A little closer than Milwaukee, but hopefully, far enough away for him.

Glad this forum mentioned about the weeklong Thanksgiving holiday. We’ll skip that time then.

Good luck on your search!
