Too Late to apply for Research?

Freshman/rising sophomore here. I was thinking of doing research this summer but due to bad planning on my part I completely forgot to ask professors early on.

To clarify, I'm not planning on having an individual research project. Rather, I'm interested in field/lab work to get experience with potential careers/later research projects. I'm hoping to assist the professor with their research, or maybe even help/shadow a graduate student? I'm really not too fussy :)

Here are the questions I have:

Is it too late to ask for summer, or should I ask to work in the fall? (although since there's school, I won't be able to help as readily and will THAT make professors more unlikely to say yes?) Do many students do this, or do most work for an individual research project? I really have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to research, so I just want to help out to get a gist for it.

Thank you!

It probably is too late, most professors have already set their summer plans. And where I live, students under 16 are not allowed to work in labs.

Thanks; I’ll probably ask to help in the fall. Can you or anyone else answer my other questions? :)

No, it’s not too late. Prepare a good template email and a resume and email every professor you can find and the odds are, someone will take you.
