My wife is worried that since there are 3 kids from my D's school applying ED for sports to the same college that may hurt her chances? Since the three kids are going for women's soccer, men's soccer and field hockey, I'm thinking it's not a factor. But given that the college is very selective and very small, maybe it is? All three kids are supported by respective coaches.

i think it is an issue. a highly selective school such as an lac like Williams or a university like Stanford is only going to take a couple kids from one hs, unless there are more than a couple exceptional athletes at that one hs, which would be highly unusual.

This is a great question. I think it is a potential issue if class rank comes into play, and they are not at the top.

It leads me to a few thoughts. 1) Is the HS a very academically focused school with a great reputation?..that would be a boost for all three. 2) How much support/influence do the coaches really have?..really tough to gauge for anyone. 3) Are all three athletes top notch athletes that would have been slotted? 4) ED greatly enhances the chances they will all get in. It shows their willingness to commit to the school, and they have selected it #1.

Thus far in my son’s class of approx 320, I am aware of one hockey player who has committed to a particular Ivy. There is also a football player who just submitted his app in anticipation of a likely letter from the same school, as well as a lacrosse player (the Ivy AD’s son) who will probably also attend. This high school has kids accepted to virtually all the Ivy’s and top LAC’s annually… so there are probably other candidates who may also be admitted to this same Ivy, based on their merits and achievements, as well.

I think it depends on which high school your child attends and how highly recruited they are in their sport. If it is a NESCAC school and the child was given a slot, then it is pretty much a done deal. If it is a highly regarded private or boarding school it probably won’t matter either.

It could be an issue is if there are other students (non-athletes) applying from the same school who are a lot more qualified in terms of GPA and test scores. And even then the athletes may be admitted in the RD round.
Other than that, I agree that it depends on the high school and where they usually send their students. However, I suggest to ask the coach if this may be a problem.
