<p>calmom- I agree. There are a few things right in CA, and that's higher education. The CA public higher education system is a first-class public college system, with opportunities at every level for students to succeed. Top student in high school? A spot at one of the prestigious UCs. Average student? Take your pick of one of dozens of Cal States throughout the state. Less than average (or other circumstance)? Attend a community college for 2-3 years, then transfer to either a Cal State or UC. I don't think there's any excuse for not succeeding in this system, as it's designed to give you a 2nd chance- how many other systems offer this kind of security?</p>

<p>NY's SUNYs suffer from lack of attention and spirit as well. Quite a few of the states in North East do not have the emphasis on their flagship schools.</p>
