TOO MANY?!

I've heard it again and again...

Too many ECs aren't good. You need to be involved in just a few. Be really involved. It shows your passion. If your invovled in everything colleges can see right through that and know that you're only doing it for the app.

Well, I'm just the type of person to be super involved in a ton of things... I like meeting new people and being kept busy with all these ECs. I'm pretty involved in each but I'm worried that college admissions would take that as if I'm just doing it for the app...

ECs:
-Varsity lacrosse
-VP for International Cultural Organization
-Founding Pres. for Chinese Club
-Founding Pres. for Junior State of America Club
-Varsity debate (State-Congress)
-local leadership program
-HOSA (state Biomed Debate)
-Volunteered over summer in China at orphange
-Mission trip to poorest part of West Virginia
-Plant genetics internship with an university's professor
-Lab volunteer work
-city's youth symphony orchestra
-lifeguard over the summer
-Junior Classical League (State)

Although I'm invovled in a lot, I'm not overly involved... that worries me. Any suggestions?

I love it. I often feel the same way about all of my EC’s and AP’s but I honestly just do all of it because I love being busy and involved in these sorts of things. I had slight concern about these things recently (see my post on “Breadth Not Depth”) but ultimately decided that I would rather spend my highschool experience partaking in things that I enjoyed rather than limiting my activities and enjoyment. Your surplus of leadership roles may also be discussed in your essay and if its concvincing enough then you have nothing to worry about!

We are involved in the same stuff! Debate, lab work, lacrosse… I will PM you about the lab work because I have a few questions :)

You’re supposed to show focus, dedication, and accomplishment. Most people can’t do that if they have a million ECs because there’s just not enough time. The problem isn’t really that colleges would think you’re being fake; it’s that you won’t have done as much with each individual EC.
But remember that most colleges don’t care very much about ECs. It’s mostly just the top few that are really concerned with them.

Extra curricular are awesome, and its awesome that you love keeping your self busy.
The big question is why do you do it/this? What do you want out of what you do? Why is it significant? What makes you stand out of the other people who do the same as you?
If you an answer this you’ve got a hell of a applicant.

@halcyonheather I agree with you and I know that colleges like depth more than breadth. But these ECs truly reflect the many aspects of me. Of what I am interested in and what I love to do. Someone on CC said that they don’t believe most high schoolers can have the kind of “passion” that college admissions like and I agree since I really don’t know what I’m on fire about. I just know that all my ECs are different sides on me that truly reflect my character… If that makes any sense? I don’t think my answer would really stand out to college admissions but that’s how I feel about my ECs. I can go into depth explaining what I love about them, but I feel like college admissions would take that as being fake…
@balledtoohard I think the above kinda answers some of those questions. Thanks for your advice! :)
