Too much hw in a class? What to do?

(I don’t want to give out too many details about this)
I’ve been getting an amount of homework in a certain class that I feel like I won’t be able to handle. Our first assignment took everyone in the class more than 3 hours to complete, and I’ve spent 2 hours on the most recent(second) homework assignment and I’m still not finished yet. We’re also been assigned multiple projects. The teacher is somewhat aware of the issue and they said they would try their best to lighten the load.

I’m trying my best not to sound like I’m complaining - it IS supposed to be a difficult class. The teacher has not taught before so I suspect they may be underestimating the amount of time it’s taking us to complete the work.

I would really rather not drop this class as it relates to what I would like to major in in college, but I’m taking several other time-consuming classes this year and I’m just looking for advice on how to move forward. I’m a junior, if that makes any difference.

If everyone is having the same concern, approach the teacher. Explain that this is one of 6 classes, so 2 hours per night is overwhelming. Ask for her strategies/guidance on how to get it done in half that time. It’s important that you not criticize the teacher or make demands. Focus on your desire to learn, but more efficiently and effectively.

This can be normal for more demanding classes like AP Euro and AP World. I have already journal due every other week that takes about 12 hours to complete. It is not very likely that EVERY night there will be 2 hours of homework, however.

@kimclan1 Thanks for your input.
I would understand if this were a humanities related course, however it’s a computer-related course. What several other students and I think is that the homework seems extremely easy for the teacher and that the teacher assumes that we would finish in a shorter amount of time than we actually do.

Is this by any chance AP Computer Science Principles, because if it is, the. It is a new course and the teacher may be using you guys as “guinea pigs”.

Otherwise, try to talk to some students that took your course last year and see if they saw the homework die down.

If the above are not the case, I would approach the teacher with a group of your peers to politely discuss the issue.
