Took my first SAT practice test and my score was...

1580/2400 (540CR M580 W460)

Ok, first things first...

I'm a junior, international student. I took the free practice test you can download from the collegeboard. I printed it and did it right away. I submitted my answers and my score was 1580/2400 or 1120/1600.

This was without any preparation of any kind, I scored my essay (I didn't do it, but I ocassionally write some english compositions and I know how can I write) with a score of 8. In a scale of 1 to 6, 3 is too low for me and 4 is maybe what i am capable of.

Math (36 right, 11 wrong, 7 omitted)
Writing (23 right, 26 wrong OUCH!) I didn't omit any surely that's a big mistake.
CR (40 right, 15 wrong, 12 omitted)

I don't know, really I expected something better like a 1700 or 1800 for my first practice test. What do you think? I'm planning on taking the 2008 June exam. My first language is Spanish, that's why my Writing CR are so low.

Well, I hear any experiences, tips, or anything you want to say to me.

Thanks!!

The first practice test without any prep isn't a great marker for how successful you will be do on the sat for the average student. I know many people who did terribly on their PSATs sophomore year (140-150) who ended up getting 2100+. I guess it all depends on how dedicated you are to improve your score.

The sats is a test you can study for, despite what some people might say. Basic things like learning grammar rules, memorizing vocab, learning how to write a great essay, learning fundamental mathematics, and learning when to and when to guess, can easily be learned after much practice.

Apply to colleges that don't consider the writing score.

A fairly comprehensive list:

nice info, thanks

What do you think about Barron's Sat 2400? Do you think it's useful?

Barron's is great. I'd suggest their specific workbooks.
Get Barron's Writing/CR/Math.

I am a native spanish speaking person too and Writing was my lowest score in the OCT SAT.
The first practice I took was the Official SAT Practice Test, with no previous practice, and scored 1800. I got a 540 in Writing, 620 in Math, and 640 in Critical Reading. I then studied consciously and intensively for a month, I finally scored 2190, 790 in Critical Reading, 730 in Math, and 670 in Writing.

I did not buy any internet guides, I payed nothing at all. I just looked for free practice tests online. Specially helpful was the free Kaplan quizbank, I recommend you look into it.

With the writing section, I really don't have much advice. Just find out what are the common traps and be prepared to avoid falling into them.

not bad at all.

My first score was 1660-ish, but now I'm in the 2000's range.

I'm so glad most of the schools I'm applying to give more weight to the writing now. I dominate it so long as I write a decent essay.

lucky you.

To increase CR i'm planning on getting the book "Hot words for the SAT" and "Word Smart". What do you say?

bump, need a reply to my last post.

thanks

I'd recommend reviewing the CR section of the practice test. Look over the questions you got wrong, go back to the passage and see where you went wrong. You can do the same with the College Board blue book. Building vocabulary is good but you can increase your CR skills at the same time if you do lots of reading in English. Bookmark dictionary.com and get in the habit of looking up every unfamiliar word you come across.

thanks for the tips
