So I took the SSAT this past weekend (12th) and everything was fine. Except for an issue during writing.

I know the writing section is 25 minutes. I was really nervous that day and I wasn't really paying attention. The proctor told us the writing section ended at 9:15. We started at 8:40, so obviously that is not 25 minutes. I forgot to make sure; writing is always an issue for me and I wanted to make the most of my time, not try to find errors in the proctor, etc. So I paced myself so that I would finish at approximately 9:15. Well, at 9:00, the proctor informed us that we had 5 minutes left, and said she was sorry if she said 9:15 was the ending time. This seriously threw me off because I ended up finishing my essay with most of the second page empty. I really don't want to take the SSAT again unless my score is really bad; I would like to focus on my application.

I understand it is my fault for not checking to make sure the time made sense, but the proctor should have said 9:05 instead of 9:15...

Luckily the rest of test had no timing problems. But I am really worried about the writing section at the moment ...

Wishstar, I’m sorry you had that experience. The SSAT is stressful enough without extra! But there’s a lesson learned here… in the future, always speak up and ask in order to clarify. Teachers and proctors are human, and make mistakes too.
In any case: what’s done is done, and worrying about it now will do nothing but distract you from your applications and most importantly, from your current classwork. You need to focus on both of those in order to get good results on March 10. The SSAT writing portion is not scored, it is used by the schools to get a sense of your writing skills. You got a page in, at least. And it was likely well done, too. Now chin up, move on, and don’t think about it again until your scores come in… at that point, you can decide whether it’s worth taking the test again. Best of luck to you!

If you had notified the SSATB within 72 hours of taking the test, they would’ve rescheduled it for free. You can reschedule before this Friday for a $35 fee

Writing section is not scored, no worries. Some schools use it to check that you wrote your own application essays.

I am on the same side with 2prepMom. It would be hard for AOs to read all the SSAT writings on top of other more important writings/essays they ask applicants to complete.

My daughter took the test on Saturday. She lost track of the time as well and had to hurry and write a conclusion. Since most of the schools we are applying to require a graded English essay to be submitted with the application, I’m not concerned about the one for the SSAT.

Also when I signed up for the test, I also ordered a copy of the essay to be sent to my home. I originally thought I was getting a writing sample which she could practice from – but it turns out that I paid $20 bucks extra to receive her essay.

Thanks guys.

I am praying that the AOs will not read the essay…at least not carefully, because it was pretty bad.

Hopefully I can get a good grade on my school-written essay and that will boost up my not-so-well written one.
