How much of a hook is athletics and state applying from worth if your D has a 3.5 GPA and Sat scores that are unremarkable? Her EC’s are significant and her art and music portfolio along with many awards and recognitions for significant community service. Should she even try for aT30 school with these stats?
Much depends upon the college, but in general geographic diversity is, IMO, a non-event at T30s;it ** might** be a feather on a scale when all things are else is equal (which is never the case). It will make no impact an an applicant with a 3.5 GPA.
Athletics matter if the applicants is being recruited, and even then, only for Division 1 schools (with some exceptions). If she’s not being recruited, then it’s just another EC.
Depends how truly unique/remarkable her awards, art and musical talents are or if she is a recruitable athlete that a coach would be willing use up one of his/her slots for her. Even if she is recruitable, there will be some level of SAT/ACT she will likely have to achieve. That level will vary by sport, by school, how good of an athlete she is and even the current status of the team (returning members and other recruits).
She is a Diver from Vermont which is a bit like a Unicorn, as one coach explained to us. She is currently being looked at by 20+ coaches for diving. She is also a Varsity Coxswain and a Pole Vaulter/Sprinter. She is being recruited by 4 Div 1 schools and also many Div 3 Schools of high regard. There isn’t any scholarship in Div 3, I know, but how does scholarship $ work in a Div 1 School for diving?
Diving shares the same scholarship pool as swimming. For females, there are 14 scholarships divided amongst however many women are on the swim/dive team **if/b the scholarships are fully funded. The specifics are questions to ask each coach.
The coaches will be able to tell you her chances much more than any of us,based upon any preread that admissions gives your daughter.
Consider asking this in the athletic recruits sub-forum here. There are folks who are very knowledgable about D1 and D3 recruiting. But in general, the coaches will be able to give you the best estimate.
But note that if your daughter is being recruited for Athletics, then being from Vermont doesn’t really help. Geographic diversity only comes into play for the non-athletes. And some of the most competitive schools, they have enough students applying from Vermont that it won’t matter.
