Top NJ Prep Schools that provide Merit Scholarships/Aid?

Hi everyone,

It's been a while since I have posted on this forum. I used CC extensively during my college application process -- but that was over 7 years ago :).

My younger sister is a rising 8th grade student, who currently attends a public school in the northern suburbs of Chicago. Due to my father's work, my entire family will be moving to NJ in the next year or so. Where we live now, the public schools are excellent -- but we are considering moving her to a private school in NJ. We are open to both boarding and non-boarding options.

My sister is an excellent student and plays a number of club sports (with volleyball being her primary sport). I think she will do well on her SSAT.

One of the factors we are looking for is school that offers generous merit based aid. My parents make a combined income of roughly 250K-300K (before taxes) so I do not think we will qualify for much, if any need-based aid. But before you make any judgments -- please keep in mind that my parents fronted the bill for my own ivy league education (and are helping me pay for business school), a mortgage and property taxes in the NJ area are not cheap from what I understand -- so cost of attendance is definitely a concern.

Can you recommend some schools in the area (or even outside of NJ) that I should start looking into and contacting? Thank you so much for your wisdom and advice.

@athlonmj: Do you know where you are moving to? Because a day school might work. In NJ, the “usual suspects” for boarding would be Blair, Peddie, and Lawrenceville.

In the Princeton area, there are a bunch of day schools (plus Hun has a very small boarding program), and many make the trek across the Delaware to schools like George and Solebury. Feel free to PM me, I am a parent with a kid in BS and another at a well-regarded NJ day school.

@SevenDad. Thanks for your reply – I will send you a PM. And to clarify, my family will be moving to the Princeton area. Parents are working at one of the many pharma companies nearby.

Lawrenceville is very near then, around 10 minutes away if I’m not mistaken. However, they do not provide merit based scholarships for incoming students. I believe Peddie, which is also near in Hightstown, offers one merit scholarship.

Blair does not offer merit scholarships.

Great. All – thank you for your help and advice. I think I have a good list of schools to conduct some due diligence on :)

Even if we decide not to send her to a boarding school, I think Princeton High School will be a fine option as well.

Cheers!
