There are also several top Public LACs you might want to consider.

SUNY Geneseo in New York is one of them. The school attracts top students (Avg. SAT 1340, GPA 94), professors are excellent, the campus is beautiful with strong acadmic programs.

Never mind that the SUNY system is chronically underfunded?

Question: how come the 4-year graduation rate is as low as 58%? Since SUNY Geneso is so selective, I cannot image that it’s due to the students’ lack of ambition. Which leads me to believe that the classes must be overfilled, and students are precluded from taking the classes they need at the time they need them. Can you shed some light on this?

It is a very good question. Public schools traditionally have a lower 4 year graduation rate than private schools. I do think you have to keep in mind the socioeconomic status of students who typically attend public schools. Due to economic reasons students may need to take-off a semester or enroll part-time.

Having graduated from Geneseo I did not find that students had to spend an additional semester or year because classes were overfilled. However, the workload depending on the major is demanding and from personal experience I did have a couple of friends that did not pass certain requirements for their majors which required that they stay on for an additional semester. Two failed a class ( needed a C) the last semester right before graduation.

I also had friends that had double-majors which required an additional semester of study to complete all of the requirements especially, if they studied abroad. More than 25% of Geneseo students travel abroad for a semester.

I agree the continued cuts to the SUNY system is not a good thing. Although we are experiencing more severe cuts in NY it really is happening everywhere. The California State schools are experiencing the same issues.

Thankfully, only 33% of Geneseo’s budget is from the State.

The SUNY website had some interesting facts I pasted below:

“The data shows that there are 260 campuses in the U.S. similar to our comprehensive colleges. SUNY Geneseo ranks first in our country for four-year graduation, and nine other SUNY comprehensive colleges rank in the top 50 (top 20 percent). No other public university system in the nation has so many of its colleges in the top 20 percent, and several states that are recognized for their high-quality comprehensive colleges have no campuses in the top fifty, including California, Texas, Michigan, Georgia, Wisconsin, and Ohio, to name a few.”
