<p>MIT's UROP program is excellent and they will either give you pay or credit or both. It is not uncommon to have 7 semesters (or even more if you stay at MIT for the summer and do research through the winter IAP period) of research while an undergrad at MIT, and they're offered in any field you want (even the smallest fields like Ocean Engineering which has classes of about 20 people have plenty of UROPs).</p>
<p>Michigan's UROP is the same. You can stay on for the 4 years including the summer if you enjoy doing research and are good at it.</p>
<p>MIT's IAP period is a great idea. I wish more universities will adopt that.</p>
<p>James Madison University in VA has a strong program for undergraduate research</p>
<p>As far as the UCs go, UCSC is the best for undergrad research.</p>
