Top Undergrad Economics Schools?

Please check out the stats and let me know what you guys think I’d be good for?

I’m falling in love with Economics…

Current School: Community College
GPA: 4.0
Age: 26
Race: Black / Latino
Major: Business Administration

of Credits taken this semester: 22 (7 courses)

HS GPA: 3.0 (However, I graduated HS in 2006 - 9 years ago) – Approximately 10 AP courses
Essay Topic(s): My passion for Economics / future career goals / overcoming homeless shelter / dealing with mom’s death in junior year of HS
Recommendations: Highest marks in all categories
Test Scores: Not Required (Therefore I didn’t submit)

Post-graduation goals are PhD study or job/career?

If PhD study, look for economics departments that include substantial math in their economics courses (check catalogs for math prerequisites of economics courses). You should try to complete multivariable calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, and introductory statistics at your community college before you transfer. Preparation for economics PhD study includes junior/senior level math and statistics courses (e.g. real analysis, proof-based linear algebra, calculus-based probability theory).

Of course, cost and financial aid constraints need to be considered.

@ucbalumnus You hit it right on the head…but when I put in my apps, I feel like I made a big mistake as I was originally focused on accounting…the only two schools I feel that I applied to that fit that requirement are Brown & Cornell and those are most definitely reaches for me.

I also applied to:

Rutgers - no financial aid awarded since I’m not graduating. SMH
ASU** - waiting on decision now, I’m curious about their program
Rider - no structure and NOOOO challenge/math in their economics program (but strong accounting program)
NJCU - Ugh.

What does this mean? Are you not a senior?

OP is presumably a transfer applicant, currently at a community college.

@"Erin’s Dad"‌ I’m technically a senior at CC with my # of credits, but some of those do not even apply to my degree thanks to AP courses. But yeah, I’m looking for schools that I could apply too, but the deadlines are killing me, lol.
March 1 is in 2 days damn near, so for most schools that’s it…

When you say “Rutgers - no financial aid awarded since I’m not graduating”, does that mean because you are not getting an associates degree?

Exactly @ucbalumnus‌ ; and come to find out they may even have a pretty good Economics program, but it wouldn’tt get the same one on one as Amherst. OH, I FORGOT TO MENTION I APPLIED TO AMHERST ECON as well!

If you get into no suitable affordable schools, could you stay at the CC, finish the associates degree, and reapply including Rutgers to at least get financial aid there?

Math prerequisites for intermediate microeconomics courses:

Amherst ECON 301: multivariable calculus
Brown ECON 1130: calculus 2
Cornell ECON 3030: calculus
Amherst ECON 300: calculus 1
Brown ECON 1110: calculus 1
Rutgers 01:220:320: calculus 1
Arizona State ECN 312: brief calculus and business math
NJCU ECO 363: no math prerequisites
Rider ECO 211: no math prerequisites

Note that Amherst and Brown have more-math and less-math options.

I see you did your research! Haha, how did you find all of that so fast @ucbalumnus‌ ; I found the same info you did, although I didn’t know about the multivariable option; I plan on going to grad school for the PhD and teaching, I like that idea a lot.

Web search for “[college name] economics courses” and “[college name] math courses” should lead you to some place on the college’s web site where you can look up course descriptions and prerequisites.

Ah, got ya. So all the viable colleges’ deadlines are this weekend so I think I just need to relax and see what happens. The only reason I’m even leaving earlier than I normally would be is simply due to the fact that my landlord doesn’t want me to stay where I’m living if and only if I’m going to stay for half a year (and I only have one semester left)…as a result, to avoid being homeless I’m force transferring for the fall unfortunately, lol.
