How would you determine the style of band at a particular school? I haven’t found their websites very descriptive of their performing philosophies.

The band websites are definitely hit or miss. Some of the info is on the various websites - but it takes a little digging.

We talked extensively with the band folks at Penn State and DS has several band friends who graduated this past spring who have gone on to bands at UT-Austin, LSU, Okla State, Univ of Okla, and a few others I can’t think of. The “former” band members have been really good about communicating thoughts/feelings to the “current” band members.

I think some of the bands also have Facebook pages or have current members willing to take questions via email. Just depends on the school.

Facebook’s an excellent idea - thanks.

I would just add–a lot depends on what he wants out of the marching band experience. If he goes to one of the Ivies that has a “scatter band” (which I think is all of them except for Cornell), he will get to play, and he will have fun. Although they may have “auditions,” he will probably not need to worry about getting in.
