topics for college essay

Hi. I'm wondering what topics can be written on a college essay. I want to write something either about music and it different genres (actually its one genre of music i want to write about) or pop/urban culture. But a few people said thats not the type of topic they are looking for. so my question is can my college essay be on anything or does have it be on something else (like me, or why i want to go to college X)

Your topic can basically be about anything. That being said, you should choose wisely. You need to pick a topic that allows your true self to be shown in the essay. Don’t write about your favorite music. Write about how music has affected you. Colleges want your essay to be unique and well written, but above all they want you to be honest and show your true self so that they can see whether or not you are a fit and deserve admittance.

Well I don’t really get what kind of topic you are looking for i.e. political or general or anything… be more descriptive.

What I can come up with right now is -Poverty driven countries, 3rd world countries or you can take up some important issues around the world like global warming or something, any political changes you wish to bring, money in the Swiss bank or why is US leading the world? give your reasons or capitalism or communism…
That is all I can think right now. In case I get something better than this I’ll get back

What i mean is what topics are usually written in a college essay. Can i just pick any topic or do i need to follow a prompt or a set of rules when drafting my essay.

Well, you usually have to follow a prompt. Here are the Common App essay topics to choose from this year:

1) Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you.
2) Discuss some issue of personal, local, national, or international concern and its importance to you.
3) Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence.
4) Describe a character in fiction, a historical figure, or a creative work (as in art, music, science, etc.) that has had an influence on you, and explain that influence.
5) A range of academic interests, personal perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the educational mix. Given your personal background, describe an experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity in a college community, or an encounter that demonstrated the importance of diversity to you.
6) Topic of your choice.

You can write about anything, but you have to make sure it is personal/unique to you and answers the prompt. I found some samples online from previous years if you want to see:

Most of these people write about significant experiences in their life - a memorable fishing trip, overcoming fear of public speaking, their experiences in a foreign country, how they reacted when they found out they were adopted, etc.
