Hello, I am a high school senior who is about to start his last season of track, and i have emailed a few coaches about recruitment and about five of them told me the same think: Thanks for the interest, please keep me updated on your senior season, Goodluck!

I was just wondering if this is a good sign or are they just saying that to get rid of me?
Before you answer though you should know that I'm not the best athlete, and all of the schools are either SEC or ACC (top track and field conferences) but i have been told that i have tremendous potential. Please help me!!!!

Are you looking for money, help getting into the school, or do you just want to make the team as a walk on? If money or help, I think you are late. Signing is, I think, February 5 for XC and track, and while some schools might have some money left after that, it will be hard to come by.

If you just want to make the team, keep improving and I’m sure they will welcome you.

Dman - you do not say what division you are looking at but if its D1 - the “starting” times are in the range of

3,200 - sub 9:30
1,600 - sub 4:25
800 - sub 1:56

again this is very general - many D1 schools will be lower and some will be higher.

I recommend you review those schools rosters and look at the current runners - many schools put the bio’s and it shows what times they had in high school

It sounds like they are saying “thank you for the interest and when update me with your times and if they improve I will contact you”

And just because they might not be interested in you from a financial side of things - you can always try and walk on and keep improving

You can figure the rest of the schools in the conference are looking for similar. Brutal honesty time: I think that ship may have already sailed.

Just went through this last year with S and was in contact with several SEC & ACC D1 schools for track. Most of what we heard this time of year were vague comments, just like you received. Coaches were very non-committal and we had a hard time getting coaches to respond to my S as to whether or not he would have a roster spot, let alone any athletic money.

My S was never told were he stood in the mix, but his performance early in outdoor season (senior year) was very strong and coaches were still contacting him well into Feb (after the signing date). We got the impression that with very little money to go around the coaches will look to determine who is coming to the school anyway because of academic money or in state tuition and then use what they have left sparingly to lock in top recruits for select openings.

If you have already applied to or been admitted to these schools you may need to come out and ask the coach directly where you fit in. If you need help with admissions, you will need to ask for it now. Otherwise they are likely keeping you in the mix to see how the rest of their recruiting efforts pan out.

So you may not have missed out yet, but there isnt much to miss anyway!!!

Pick up the phone!!! Dman, do you know how many email messages D1 coaches receive from student athletes? Take the fact that you are getting a response as a positive sign. You have to be memorable…pick up the phone, send a letter with your interest, etc. It is never too late, I have seen several students get recruited from state track meets. The signing period for Track starts on Feb 5th and goes until August for a reason.
