I’ve been in an number of shows, which are mostly ensemble roles but never had any actual training. Does this make me at an disadvantage for college auditions? I do have a resume though. So, is one more emphasized than the other? or are they equally sought out?
What is your current grade level? Experience is nice but you won’t get into a college based on your resume. In my opinion, training will help you more in the audition room. Basic dance training will get you through some (not all) dance calls and vocal technique will keep your voice healthy for the long season. Do you have time for both (shows and training?).
@artskids I will be a upcoming senior in the fall and I will be training at a (1/2 day PA HS) so the dance training will be integrated into the curriculum. Yes, I will have time for both.
@BlackMTGirl2022 Ya know I asked a similar question to a wise sage and very experienced coach at MTCA some months back. I was concerned because my daughter has only High school productions and one community theater stint on her resume and I was worried that there wasn’t a ton there. There are kids who come into this with all sorts of real world experience and even prestigious agents and awards. All very different levels of work experience. He really stressed that for the most part, the schools are concerned with what you bring into the room. What you show them. Much more than your resume. Preparation is essential and training good but your talent, personality, authenticity, how well you will work in their specific program etc. Also on the more superficial side…your look and what unique qualities you bring. I believe this is true. The resume tells them a bit about you and your background but what’s really important is what happens in the room.
@laylamom thank you for telling me! I always knew that what you bring into the audition is important, I was just worried that my lack of training would hinder me from going on. But thank you for your input!
