Alright. Thanks alot Entomom. Appreciate it. In the meantime…I’m gonna work on my college-specific essay…lol

I have a question regarding the recommendations. I’m applying as a Transfer to GWU, among other schools and I’m still a bit iffy on how to go about with the recs. For example, I received a link which linked to the “Teacher/Faculty Recommendation:Application for Admission”. Can I just use that as the whole rec for GWU? or do I still need an actual letter, along with that form. A similar form was linked to me from Georgetown, can i JUST use that form as the rec? I had thought that the prof would write one letter of recommendation that you could use for ALL schools you applied to. It seems like a lot to fill out if they gotta write a letter AND fill out the specific form for each, individual school lol.

Thanks for the advice in advance.

All schools using the CA should have the same LOR form. But if a college wants you to fill out a specific form, then your prof will have to use it (you should either provide them with a hard copy of the form or an internet link to it). However, the actual letter that they write for you can be reused for all of your schools. Usually a LOR form includes both boxes to check and a space for the prof to insert the text of their letter.

Hope that answers your question.

If I’m going abroad while I’m applying to transfer, do I just have my foreign professors fill out the mid-term report forms for me?

^The mid-term report is just for grades, so whoever has access to them can fill it out.

Thanks for the response…another question though heh…
I COMPLETELY forgot about the common app cause I didn’t even use it when I applied to the state school I’m currently attending. I’m a dummy and also did not use it when I started filling out stuff for a couple of transfer apps in sept. Can I still go back to using the common app for them even though I filled out some prelim info and sent it already? What was sent was mostly personal info(names/background info/and some other boring stuff) no essays or anything that seems to actually matter…

I think it should be alright. Schools usually just start a file for you and when it’s complete they will review it. If you have parts of their application, but all of the CA, they will likely just go with the CA. If they’ve given you some sort of school ID to keep track of your case, you might want to give them a quick call and make sure it’s OK, you don’t want to confuse them or end up with 2 incomplete files.

For the CA transfer essay, if i put college specific details, you said majority should be a general reason to transfer and about a paragraph about the college. right…?

For my essay, i have the name Pepperdine pretty much scattered throughout the entire essay but i mainly explain why I want to transfer, supported with valid points as to why Pepperdine will help me to achieve this. Its kinda sorta starting to sound like “why do you want to attend college X” which could be bad because thats not what the essay question is asking…

But would that be ok? I mean …overall, my message comes through. like after reading the whole thing, you can see what my reasons to transfer and what my objectives are. But i do mention pepperdine ALOT in order to explain how pepp can give me something my current instit. cannot…is that alright…?

^I think you might be over thinking my comments some. Your main goal should be to write a clear essay describing why you want to transfer and why P has those things that are lacking in your current school. If your essay does that, it’s fine.

If you’re worried about mentioning P too much, go back through and see if there are some places where you can be more general. For instance, it seems to me that your reasons for wanting to leave your current school should have nothing to do with P or any other specific college. Once you decide you want to transfer, then you look for schools that suit your needs better, that’s where qualities of P come into play.

Okay I see. Thanks for that. Yeah, i think that i was over thinking your comments a bit too much. But yes, i do explain why I want to transfer clearly, and for every reason that I mention for why I want to transfer, I support that paragraph with what P has, to fulfill that need.

So for letters of recommendation, can I still send them to the schools I’m interested in transferring to even though they don’t require them?

Yes, additional information is generally OK. Just be sure to read what each school say about supplements and follow their instructions, and if you send something extra, make sure it is of the highest quality and adds new information to your application.

I have tried for 2 years and more to make it at my school, but it seems that I just cannot carve out any sustainable social life. I just don’t have anyone in common with me and I really wish to transfer. But I am already a junior.

That said, finances are not an issue and I do not mind losing a year or two of credits and having to start as sophomore or junior. I am also an international student.

Is this possible? the FAQs on most colleges’ websites say nothing about this, so I’m curious. Of course if there is no straight answer I’ll just email the colleges themselves.

Thanks.

For some schools, you are not eligible to transfer if you have completed more than 2 years of college post HS. At others, you can, but they will only let you transfer 2 yrs of credit. There might be others that will accept more college credit, but I’m not familiar with them.

Most college websites discuss transfer eligibility, here are a couple of examples:

Chances for Transfer from USC to Illinois Champaign or Michigan Ann arbor as Business major!
I spent 2 years in Community college and transfered to USC marshall school of business. After I took a few courses in USC this year, I wanted to transfer to Illinois Champaign or Michigan Ann arbor. I will complete 118 units including the Spring 2010 in USC. (I dont know if they will consider me as junior or senior)
GPA: 3.899 community college
GPA: 3.5-3.6 USC (Ist semseter)

Please tell me anything about my chances. I really want to go away from USC.
In fact, I also will apply UC Berkeley for HASS. (I was admitted as Econ major this year but I decline my offer. ) Please chance me for this as well!
thanks so muchhhhhhhhhhhh!

More questions on the letters of recommendations heh…

I’m not quite sure as to what other info I need to give the profs to write the letter.

Also, should I ask them to mail it, provided I give them envelopes with stamps? Or should I ask them to give the sealed letters back so I can mail it.

You could give them a short resume that shows some of your academic interests and goals. Either way is fine, just make sure there’s enough postage if you do the former.

Hi guyz, next year, i’ll attend a canadian university (probably McGill). Will i be allowed to transfer to a u.s. college (NYU, Northwestern, Georgetown, GWU, Boston College, Tufts etc.) after my freshman year ? Thx

That information should be provided on the college websites. Have you read them and do you have specific questions because they’re not clear about their policies?

Actually, i just wanted to know if it was something usual (a transfer from a canadian university to as u.s. college) ^^ my question wasn’t clear, i’m sorry. I asked it because i could read a lot of threads of people considering a transfer from a u.s. college to a canadian one, which seems pretty common, but i couldn’t find a thread about a transfer in the other way.

So, even though college websites say that it’s possible, i wanted to be sure that it was realistic, not only something that never happens :-)
