transfer admissions, general studies

Is anyone familiar w/ the school of general studies? How competitive the admissions process is? From what I understand it's relatively lax. I've got a 3.96 from a C.C. and am curious if I've got a shot for transfer as a junior in '08.

Thanks.

GPA is too low for a transfer.

3.96 is too low?

Dude you have a chance. your GPA is not the sole definition of who you are. I think people on CC are sometimes too numerical in talking about peoples chances of getting into schools.

he was kidding, i think. He was mocking the tiny amount of detail given in the post, which completely eliminates any ability to give a meaningful analysis.

My apologies. I'm just used to GPA being the most heavily weighed factor in the admissions process. I'm also aware this may not be true for GS. I graduated from high school in 2001 with mediocre grades and a 1070 on my SAT's. Upon graduation I continued to screw off, failing/dropping out of two schools within about two years.

Since then, I've worked a variety of jobs that gave me the oppurtunity to get my head screwed on straight and figure what I want out of life. I worked at a Honda dealership where I worked my way up from washing cars to selling them. I worked at a brand new, ultra-exclusive country club on Nantucket Island where I helped to organize and create the snack bar kitchen during the club's opening season. I also worked my way up the ranks of a valet parking company in Tampa, FL.

After being thrown out of the house, I began work with the goal of saving up to "go back to school", admittingly because that just seemed like the thing to do more than anything else. As time passed however, I began to want an education for the knowledge it provides just as much as the boost in socio-economic status.

As stated, I will have 2 years of college w/ a high GPA, a few EC's such as Phi Theta Kappa (nant'l honor cociet for c.c.'s) and a nomination for a research paper contest. I can provide two excellant prof. reccomendations. I also plan to provide an excellant essay.

After researching the school of General Studies, I feel it would be a good match for me, however I'm a bit intimidated as it is Columbia University, an Ivy League school. Can anyone weigh in as to what type of canidate they are looking for? Is this an appropriate school for me to pursue?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Dont be intimidated, Columbia is an Ivy league but i think given the whole picture you sound like a person that has gained some focus and is ready to do business. Columbia looks for a focused and goal oriented student, that aside i believe its all in the presentation, write a wonderful essay and show your multifaceted side.

For what it's worth, you're not an atypical applicant. GS is looking for people with your newfound attitude and motivation. Go for it.

Start working on your essay today. Be honest, feel free to admit mistakes but keep it positive.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice and encouragement guys.

Whats the difference between GS and the other Columbia schools?

GS is exclusively for applicants who will be returning to their academics after taking at least a year off.
