Does anyone know how much weight is given to the essay portion of the Transfer Application? Thanks.

I transferred here to UNC almost 2 years ago and asked that very question. I was told the essay is weighed equal to academics in the decision-making process.

The way they look at it is that there are a number of good state-run universities (UNC Wilmington, Greensboro, Asheville, Charlotte, ECU, NC State) that you could go to if you have good grades and ECs and the like, but why do you deserve to go to the best the state has to offer? The essay will tell them if you are what they consider UNC material.

I think a well-polished and well-revised essay also shows how badly you want into the school.

Things I did that may have been a little over kill but you could try to improve your chances:

1) I wrote my essay with help from my community college literature professor. I emailed my 1st rough draft (that I thought was pretty damn good) and she told me to scrap it and start over. That exchange happened for 3 or 4 drafts until I had an amazing final copy.

2) Although it’s not required, I had professors at my community college send letters of recommendations to the admissions office. People in academia at all levels like to hear how awesome you are from people with degrees, no matter to what level you’re attempting to gain admittance.
