My D decided on going to a state school this upcoming year to double major in dance and bio. She had a couple BFA acceptances but had to turn them down due to the cost. That being said, does anyone know of any BFA programs that take transfer students? We’d love to look into some now just incase she decides after her first year that she isn’t excelling. Thanks!
@clip2023 I’m not aware of any BFA programs that don’t take transfer students, but you would have to look at specific BFA programs because the transfer application process and the degree requirements/credits vary at each school. Many BFA programs require a certain number of dance credits in order to meet the dance requirements to transfer in at the same grade level. I know of a student who transferred from a BFA program after 1 year and into another and came in as a sophomore. I also know of a student who studied as a BA in dance major and transferred in to a BFA, but because her BA dance requirements did not meet the BFA degree requirements, she came in as a freshman, even though she had completed one year of college. I also know of dancers that did trainee programs at professional companies after completing high school and decided to go to college that came in as freshmen because they did not have the academic credits to come in as sophomores. So be sure to compare the credits your daughter has earned with the degree requirements of the BFA programs in which she is interested.
I’m pretty sure that at Purchase, NYU and USC you can transfer, but you still come in as a Freshman BFA student.
@shanniebannie @Undercovermom1 thank you! We’re hoping that some of the academic credits she takes will be able to transfer, I figured none of the dance credits would. There’s not a ton of info on it so I figured I’d ask!
Does anyone have any information on how many transfers the programs like Suny Purchase, NYU, UNCSA Fordham take on? Is it harder to transfer or to come in as a freshman? How many transfers do they typically take?
This was discussed at the NYU audition. They take very few transfers because they have a 3 year program. If they do take you, then the often have dancers start as freshman. I do not remember what Fordham had to say about it or if it was raised as a question.
@amom2girls Thank you, I had a feeling it may be hard to transfer. While its hard to start over as a freshman I completely get why the colleges do it. We have a friend that took a gap year as she didn’t get into the programs she wanted, she trained for a year and now is accepted to her top choice for fall 2019 as a freshman. My DD journey was a bit different, we just weren’t in a place where she could audition for other programs so she started the local universities program.Things have improved and she found she definately wants more of a conservatory program so wants/needs to transfer but there is so little information about transferring into BFA’s for dance.
@JRPdance I would suggest emailing that question to whichever schools/programs that she is interested in just so you have current and correct information. That way you won’t waste any time when you are putting together a list of schools. We found every program to be very responsive when we would email questions during the application process.
