Is it possible to transfer colleges as a football recruit? I'm ok staying at my current college (d3), but I'm curious if it's possible to transfer and how it works. Would I send my high school film? I didn't get a lot of playing time as a freshman. I also don't want my current coaches to find out if it didn't end up working out.
I feel so busy during college, so I can't imagine doing all of those visits and phone calls with coaches like I did during high school. Also it feels like it'd have to be different because I've read that the transfer applications are due mid-spring semester, but I remember the recruitment classes were mostly set by early winter.
Are there rules about d1? I think I've heard about people who've transferred across d1s, but the d1 stories were for other sports. I had 2 d1 offers in high school, but one of the reasons I didn't pick either of them was because they weren't with full athletic scholarships
Yes there are rules, lots of them. Check the NCAA pages. It is likely your coach will find out about it so he can release you to the other teams. http://www.ncaa.org/student-athletes/current/want-transfer

It is not the same as freshmen recruiting.
Thanks for sending those links @twoinanddone !
It seems the procedure differs from d3->d3 v.s. d3->d1 or d2. For d3->d3, I can send this form http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/AMA/compliance_forms/DIII/DIII%20Permission%20to%20Contact.pdf and I’m supposed to get privacy for 30 days. It seems that can be renewed.
Do you know what the timeline and protocol for contacting coaches after I sign the self release? Do I show them my high school film, SAT, and college transcript?
