Alright, so here's the deal..

I'm only using the commonapp to apply to one school, that being Northeastern University. My community college has transfer agreements with the other schools I'm interested in, so I don't have to use the commonapp for those. My main question is, can I customize my essay towards Northeastern because of this? Or do I still have to abide by the general transfer prompt?

You can and should customize.

Well, I sure hope I can, because it would make the essay a whole lot easier. I’ve heard that people can create separate commonapp accounts just so they can customize every essay- is that true?

Most schools just want to see at least 2 essays. One from common app and another one from their supplemental app - uniquely focused on why you want to transfer and what objectives do you hope to accomplish at a new institution. If you’re going to write any more than that, then you’re indirectly following the instructions.

I see. Well, Northeastern only requires the generic essay, the supplement doesn’t require another one. I just find it difficult to answer the “Why transfer”, when I have to transfer because I’m at a community college.

Yes, you can make different versions of your CA, including the essay. People create multiple versions for many reasons, modifying essays, giving different SAT scores for colleges with different rules about Score Choice, etc. Look at the CA forum and Search for ‘customize’ or something like that and you will find information.

While many colleges ask for a Why School X? in their supplement, some don’t. And if they don’t, IMO you should include individual school information in the main CA essay.

Yes, as a CC student, you can state the obvious in your first sentence and then go on to discuss why NEU fits your goals and needs to a T (eg. internships, big city, etc.)
