Transfer for Fall '11

Hi! I'm new around here but I've been reading posts on here for quite some time. I have a few questions I was hoping to get input on. I am going to apply as a transfer for Fall '11 to Vanderbilt...

I live 20 minutes from Nashville, does this provide any advantage versus an out-of-state transfer applicant? With some schools, even private ones, it does.

I am currently attending a community college, but will be at MTSU in the Spring...Is my community college background a disadvantage?

Do taking any of the SAT subject tests provide an advantage or make you stand out as an applicant? What about CLEPs?

I graduated when I was 16 by taking the California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) and getting my diploma equivalency. I'm 17 now. Is that a major disadvantage? I can't find anything on the Vanderbilt web site about GED or other special circumstance applicants.

I have a really good GPA, currently a 4.0, but I'm taking 19 credits this semester and that may change. I also do some volunteering at a hospital and have a part-time job...anyways, I just want to get ALL possible advantages. I would ask a guidance counselor these questions but I think it's a bit premature. I really appreciate any input at all!! Thanks for reading!

No. For transfer, it doesn’t matter whether you’re in or out of Nashville.

Your credits from those schools will be worthless when you get into Vandy, that’s the only disadvantage I can think of.

Submit your SAT subject tests if you score above 700. Below that…it’s questionable.

Contact vandy amins.

You should talk to a guidance counselor. They are good questions.

Not sure the answer to #2 is correct. I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to transfer your credits from both the CC and MTSU … if not for equivalent credit, you can receive “free” credit, which counts toward the number of credits needed to graduate. Each course will be evaluated in a transfer credit evaluation process based on the syllabus from the school you attended for that course, as well as on the contact hours for the course.

The website will explain what you need to provide with your transfer application (grades, scores, recommendations, etc).

I don’t know about your high school graduation issue — definitely contact admissions and explain your situation. They can tell you whether or not it is a deal-breaker for admissions.

There is no way for any of us to know your chances. The best advice I can give you is to put together a great application and hang in there until spring. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the replies! You guys are really helpful!!

anyone applying for spring transfer?

Vanderbilt only admits students in the fall now.

I am contemplating if I should retake the ACT or SAT since the deadline is coming up.

Here are my stats:
HS:
Graduated 41 out of 255 with an unweighted GPA of 3.55.
Highest ACT score was a 24 with a 7 on writing my senior year.
I did take the SAT, but I like to think that I never took it.
I ran Track all four years and Cross Country my 10, 11, and 12 year. Varsity every year.
I was inducted in BETA my sophomore year.
I was inducted into the National Technical Honor Society my senior year.
I was part of HOSA, FBLA, and DECA clubs.
In my junior year I was accepted into a clinical internship class that I participated in my last semester of my senior year. I worked at a local hospital four days a week for ~4 months.
The last semester of my senior year I was recognized as a Tennessee Scholar and was awarded with the Educate & Grow Sumner County Scholarship that paid full tuition to Volunteer State Community College for two years.
I took three dual enrollment classes through VSSC my senior year; Pre-Calculus I and English 1010 and 1020. I received a ‘B’ in those courses, unfortunately.
I did various volunteer jobs including working at the elementary school, fundraisers for track and cross country, christmas fundraiser for DECA, etc.

CC:
I have been a student at Volunteer State Community College since fall of 2009.
My current GPA is 3.3 and after this semester should be around 3.4.
I have a completed a rigor of courses including Calculus, General Chemistry I, General Chemistry II, Biology, along with prerequisites.
I will be graduating with an Associates in Math and Science degree next semester.
I was accepted into the National Society of Leadership and Success last year and was awarded the National Excellence in Leadership award.
I tutor English and Algebra at the moment.
The negatives about my college transcript: I received a ‘D’ in Gen Chem I my first semester, took it the next semester again and received a ‘B’. I took Organic Chemistry I a few weeks of this semester but dropped it so I could focus my time on General Biology I.

I would love some great advice on making my application stronger.
One thing I plan on doing is volunteering at the same hospital I worked at my senior year of high school over winter break.
I really would like some feedback on if I should retake the ACT or SAT.
I have an identical twin brother with similar statistics who should be posting soon.

Thanks!

Applying to Vanderbilt fall 2011 as a sophomore.

HS GPA: 3.65 & 4.3
SAT SCORE: 1250/2400, 1940/2400
A bunch of EC’s w/ leadership

College: Right now I’m on track to have a 3.7+, but it could be higher
A bunch of EC’s w/ leadership
Recs should be pretty good.

If uour not coming from another presigous school your credits will not fill requirements. I know tons of transfers that are basically freshmen.

My D transfered into Vandy as a sophomore from a small LAC & got plenty of credit. She came in with sophomore status & will graduate on time with no problem (including two semesters of only 4 classes). It depends a lot on the courses taken.
