Transfer Friendly?

Hello, I'm a high school senior from Texas who is looking to go to community college for either six months or a year and then transfer to Emerson. I want to double major in theatre and communications. I know that if I want to audition for theatre as a transfer I will have to audition next winter in NOLA or Houston and then enter the following fall. However, for communications I can transfer into the second semester of my freshman year. I guess I should do that and then audition at Emerson for the theatre double major? I'm not sure, but either way, I am so scared to be a transfer. Will it be hard for me to make friends and find my place? That's what I'm mainly worried about because I have read many transfer horror stories from different places.

I’m not sure about friends and finding a place, but you need to know is that I’ve heard over and over again that being a transfer to Emerson can be difficult. This is because Emerson offers little if any need-based FA (or even merit scholarships, but I’m not 100% on that) to transfers - I think it goes to already admitted students first. I’m also pretty sure they don’t guarantee housing for transfers, because they give priority to first-year freshmen and sophomores, who are required to live on campus. Transfer students can be asked to be put on a waitlist. I know that in particular will probably make it difficult to find a place and make friends, because you’re already isolated from the center of activity and from the students who are your age/year.

I also found this on the admissions website:

I’m also fairly certain you’d have to audition at the time of application rather than after you get there, but I’m not 100% on that either - I’d contact admissions. You should also be aware that if you want to do any performing arts major, you have to apply to transfer for the fall semester.

Hope this helps. Good luck to you!
