I’m a freshmen at AU and was wndering if many kids tend to transfer to one of the oer big DC schools. I’m thinking about aplying to GW

From the people I know, not that many. I transferred out, but not to another DC school.

I don't know if GW's gonna be a major improvement from AU. It's just gonna be more expensive.
I transferred out as well. Not DC.

I have followed the American U thread for awhile now, as my son will be attending in the fall. I have noticed that there have been several messages about students transferring out of AU, and I'm curious as to why there seems to be alot of students who are unhappy or dissatisfied enough to leave. What are the reasons why this is happening - academics, facilities, atmosphere, bad vibes, or what?

As someone who transferred out of AU, my biggest issue was location. I'm from Bethesda (which is truly 2 miles outside of DC), so it was tough being in a place that was so same-old-same-old when everyone else there was experiencing DC for the first time.

I also didn't like how AU was so focused on poli sci/international relations...I like to interact with people with a variety of interests and it just seemed that most people I met were only interested in the social sciences and hated math/science/foreign language/etc.

I was pretty underwhelmed by the student body...there was next to no school spirit and so many people just seemed displeased with the school in general. Again, which there was a great deal of racial/ethnic/socioeconomic diversity, everyone seemed to be very liberal and politically homogeneous. The facilities are nice enough but certainly not enough to keep me interested in the school long-term.

And just to add - I thought the academics were truly top-notch. Even as a freshman, all my professors were really great and helpful. As it turns out, AU wasn't the school for me, but the academics did make me second guess my decision to transfer.

hg1050 - Same old same old gets old quick doesn't it? I hope your transfer will work out.

hoverdad - Don't worry about the threads posted. CC is just a small subset of the real world, so take everything with a grain of salt, or perhaps an entire salt mine.

Thank you...DC really is a great college town, it was just frustrating when everyone was ooh-ing and ahh-ing over all the cool stuff in DC when it was the same stuff I have been experiencing my whole life.
