Transfer option class of 2022 at Cornell

I got the TO for Human Ecology and I am planning on following through with the TO.

Does anyone know if it would hurt our chances if we decide to change majors? There is another major that is also within Human Ecology that aligns more with my interests and is on the sheet on the email they sent us, but I rather stay with the major I originally applied with if changing my major would affect Cornell’s decision.

@sarahhill I think you have to transfer into Cornell then change your major.

Anyone interested in a facebook page for TO Class of 2022? I think it will be a nice place to meet each other before we go to Cornell.

@college13567 yes! or a groupme would work too, i think that might be better since more people use groupme

What is TO? Is it like GT or how is it different?

@livedexperience8 You can find all the TO info on Google - they’ve set up of the pages for the class of 2022

@college13567 thank you!

@sarahill yes you can change your major before going to Cornell. Its actually much easier to do before you are there. You need to send admissions a written description of why you want to change. If they approve then your major is changed. I’m not sure when your deadline is since I’m class of 2021. Source: already changed my major just waiting for admission.

Hey guys! Just wondering, as a thought, but is it, or has it even been done, possible to turn a guaranteed transfer option into a fall admission?

@danshakuimo awesome, thank you!! Which college are you transferring in to?

My S received a TO for CALS last year (for entry Fall 2018), so I can relate to the mixed feelings that you may be feeling. After the crappy highs & lows of college acceptances, many WLs & a few rejections (some quite puzzling), he decided to go to his best option school (which he really liked-- probably was his #1 choice match school, if you consider Duke, Cornell & Naval Academy to be the reaches) instead of staying home & going to CC. He has had a highly successful freshman year, but is now torn because he likes his new school a lot, has tons of friends, is on an awesome merit scholarship, but it just doesn’t have the allure/pull/name recognition that Cornell does. So, that is the potential drawback of going to a school you really like – it may make a final decision harder in the end. But, it’s a choice between 2 awesome paths, so there is no wrong choice.

CALS hosts a TO Open House in July (last year it was 7/21/17), where you can meet others in your same position, attend Q&A sessions with the administrators, meet profs in your dept, etc. It was very worthwhile for my S (as he is from SoCal & had never been there).

Here are some interesting points about the program stuck with me:

  1. For the 2016 applicants (Fall 2017 TOs), approximately 500 were offered TO in CALS (includes Dyson). Typically 50% of so take Cornell up on the TO offer & apply. Last year, out of 500, 280 students utilized their TO & were admitted. Of those, 180 (64%) ended up coming to Cornell as sophomores.
  2. There is some "wiggle" room if you just miss on a grade or have trouble getting the required course you need to complete the TO. I distinctly remember Heather Marcotte from Cornell saying that "we're not out to say 'no' to the TOs". However, communication, early & often, is key if you have a problem. I did see a student's post on another thread that he was admitted despite getting a B- in Chem (instead of a B).
  3. Once you receive your admission (rolls out every Tues in mid-April to mid-May), you have 30 days to accept.

Hope this helps!

@steglitz90 , did you get the feeling that all Colleges have a TO Open House? My D was just offered the TO for Human Ecology. Would that open house hypothetically be this July even though she would start in fall 2019? Just curious.

Update, this week we were informed that there are no orientations/programming for Human Ecology TOs this summer. But, watch email for info coming during the summer.

Hello, Just thought I’d see who was still on this thread, and if anyone is still intending to use their TO. I believe Cornell has communicated with my D via email, but she has not forwarded them to me. From what I remember, applications are available in October. ??

At this time, she does not think she will be transferring to Cornell. She is a happy student at the University of Pittsburgh.

Thanks for any information.
