Hello everyone,
I am currently enrolled at Georgia Tech and just finished my first year. I was able to get a 4.0 GPA both semesters, and joined Greek life. But, I did not enjoy my year that much. To be fair, I was helping coach cross country and baseball at my high school (which was local to Tech’s campus). So, I may not have maximized my opportunities to dive in and have fun. My reasons for looking to transfer, in short, are:
- I am in the liberal arts school at Tech, which is pretty weak. I don't like my major there, and don't see any better options to switch. The majors at the schools to which I applied excite me a lot more.
- Because Tech is so engineering focused, the people there aren't really any of "my type of people." In fact, there is a horrible stigma around the liberal arts kids there and we are often met with less-than-complimentary remarks (by both peers and faculty). I'd love to go to a school with some more like-minded folks.
- I'd like to get to and do my own thing. I've lived in Atlanta for 19 years.
Right now, I’ve been accepted to UVA and am waiting to hear back from Vanderbilt.
With all that said, I am heavily considering law school. So, do you think it’s worth transferring to a more expensive option and accumulating debt even before law school? Or just sticking it out at Tech to save the dough, and go to the best law school I am accepted to?
Thanks a ton!
UVA sounds great. And the law school connection and placements are top notch.
No reason to be unhappy. Also stop hanging around your old high school. It’s naturally a time waster and keeping you from growing.
Also, I’m sure this could have been inferred, but I forgot to mention: GT is extremely cheap for me right now. I’m in state and currently on the Hope and Zell scholarships. So, transferring would be a significant jump in price.
Have you considered transferring to UGA as it has much in the way of liberal arts where you won’t accumulate debt?
If you are doing this well at GT you would not have trouble getting into law school. Also have you considered getting involved with a political organization at GT since you are interested in law or interning?
Law school is very expensive, and you’re already on a scholarship at GT. I think you’re better off saving the money. Law schools mainly look at your GPA and LSAT scores, and much less at your particular major. If you have those, then you shouldn’t have a problem with getting in.
“accumulating debt”
How much debt? Give us the numbers for better advice.
Are you currently able to attend GT without any debt at all? Would UVA require you to take on the standard federal student loans? Would it require more debt than that?
I am formal GaTech graduate (many many years ago) who also wanted to move away from Atlanta.
Given all of the above, I would go as people suggested to UGA. No way to loose Hope, and go to UVA and pay OOS.
I agree that GaTech is not very liberal college. However it is great for business and economics.
I would wait to move from GA after getting undergraduate degree, given that you would have to pay a lot for law school.
