Transfer out of risd to another art school?

I am planning to go to RISD for the first foundation year and transfer to another art school, like Art Center, MICA, CalArts. Can I do that? The reason I'm doing this is because for the first year of risd I have scholarships that will cover most of my tuition, I would just need to take out 10k in loans. Would I be able to get scholarships and financial aid, if I were to transfer after 1 year at risd? Other Art Schools should have better financial aid compared to RISD, which is why I want to transfer.

That is a good idea. I read a few comments on here that expressed esteemed approval of RISD’s foundation year. If you are eligible, you will receive scholarships as a transfer student. After all, you need to apply to those schools to which you wish to attend, and when those school review your application and portfolio, they will determine your qualification for an award. MICA is the most generous school you listed for gift aid. The other two are more difficult. But it will depend largely on your portfolio, as schools tend to give money either to the most needy or most promising candidate. Make sure the school offers what you hope to obtain in your education.

I"m sorry to say that you should probably stay at RISD. Most transfer applicants don’t get merit aid and even need based aid is limited for transfers.

Also I"m wondering if foundation years are honored by other schools or would you end up having to do a foundation year again. Something to check on. Taxguy is right, most merit and need based aid is issued at the freshman year and that’s pretty much it unless they have dedicated grants for additional years, i.e. soph, jr or sr’s only.

I think it really depends on the school. I transferred from CCA to Pratt Institute and I only need to take some sort of a 3D course to fulfill my foundation requirements. Otherwise, all my credits transferred and I even got out of having to take 20th century art history that’s required for sophomores. And weirdly enough, I received more financial aid from Pratt even though I’m a transfer, in comparison to CCA. I would just apply to schools and see what happens. You’ll never know. Good luck!

Btw, I’m not 100% sure but I don’t believe Art Center will take any foundation year credits, mainly because they don’t have a foundation year. I believe the first year there, you automatically jump into your major and if you end up changing it, you have to drop out and re-apply again. My friend had some liberal arts credits transfer over but that’s about it.
