Currently I'm a business major at my university and I plan on applying for transfer. Most schools I am applying to don't have a business program so I might switch to either engineering or economics.

I was just wondering if my business credits would transfer over and is it likely (if I do end up transferring) that I'm going to have to stay for an extra semester/year at my transfer school?

Schools I am thinking of applying to are Columbia, Brown and Vanderbilt.

It is often difficult if not impossible to change majors to engineering. Engineering majors tend to have a very set curriculum which begins early in college. This is particularly true since you’re looking at a jr transfer and are not in a related field such as physics, math, etc.

what if it’s Financial Engineering which consists of some business classes.

Sorry, I’m not familiar with FE. Schools vary in what credits they accept, so you might want to give them a call before applying.

how hard would it be to switch from business to economics though?

It would be much easier to switch to economics than to engineering, I’m am positive.
I second what entomom said about the curriculum also. I am a junior engineering student and the coursework has been a load every semester.
