Sheep, the general answer is that it’s hard to transfer to Stanford period, since there are so few spots available. This year the transfer acceptance rate was about 2%. I do know one person here who transferred from Harvard after one year. This person did very well at Harvard and had applied to Stanford as a freshman and not been admitted, but was able to explain during the transfer application process how Stanford would meet particular academic needs better than Harvard for this student. So I think that’s key when you’re trying to transfer between peer schools: you need to articulate why your needs and goals would be better fulfilled here. Also–I realize you didn’t ask for opinions on this, but I do think you should try to start your freshman year with a totally open mind. You might wind up loving it at Harvard. There’s really no way to know in advance how you’ll feel about it. Good luck.

I know, hopefully I end up loving Harvard. Stanford just has been a dream of mine for a while. However, I didn’t apply there this year since I had already sent in 12 apps and I was mentally drained. In retrospect who knows if I would have gotten in, because my college outcomes were pretty random.

However, I’m concerned that particular majors I’m interested in aren’t available at Harvard (in particular Chem Engineering). ALso, I’m getting sick of North East weather.

Well, if S has the major you want and H doesn’t, that should definitely help make your case. Still, do the best you can during freshman year. You can also maybe cross-register for some ChemE classes at MIT, to try them out and to be more sure that you want to go in that direction.

I totally hear you about the weather. I grew up mainly in the northeast too, and I greatly prefer the weather here in the Bay area. The air and climate are so good that I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in, even with all the psets and papers I always seem to have. I do a lot of biking on and off campus, and there are some really beautiful areas very nearby.
