I’m a freshman at Johns Hopkins and am looking to transfer to Wharton. Highschool stats were mediocre, as I had a 3.7 GPA and a 2130 SAT (610 CR!). I am studying computer science and applied math, but I really want to go into finance. The main reason I want to transfer is
There’s no undergraduate business program here
Penn’s community involvement through business
Penn’s academic and social culture (academic as in interdisciplinary and social as in work-hard play-hard mentality)
…
Any advice on things to focus on or experiences you guys might have at Penn or applying to Penn would be really appreciated.
Also, can you do a double major as a transfer student (like cs and bba)?
It will largely depend on your GPA at Hopkins which is hard given that Hopkins is known for grade deflation. Your high school GPA is a bit lower than the average of the incoming class at Penn (usually around 3.95+) but not terrible. Your SAT CR is quite low for Penn. You can do I think an unccordinated dual degree between Wharton and SEAS, but you are not eligible for the coordinated dual degree between Wharton and SEAS (called M&T).
I think you want to transfer for the right reasons and that will help your case but it will largely depend on your GPA. You need an exceptional GPA which will be very hard given your current school and your difficult major. Just work as hard as you can do not overload yourself with classes and try to get as high a GPA as possible. Best of luck!
Thanks so much for the advise @Penn95 this is definitely some stuff I have to think about. Do you think it would make sense to retake the SAT even though theres a new format for it? Also, does coming from Hopkins help my chances at all?
OP, they already reviewed you and you were not accepted. If you apply again as a transfer they will see your file from last year. Which they passed on.
@Math557 Yes they do, however there is no place to study business here as an undergraduate, that I all I meant in my reasoning to leave. @ClarinetDad16 I don’t dislike Hopkins by any means, I just feel like Wharton would be a better place for me to ingratiate myself with others of the same interests as mine along with the other reasons I said above. To what extent do they weigh the fact that one has applied before, as I have heard good and bad things about applying to a school more than once.
@ClarinetDad16 I would just have to release grades to the colleges, and I would have my first semester grades to go off of. Any opinion on my previous question?
If you applied before and got on the 2nd round of waiting list. It indicated that you were very close to be accepted. It may help your transfer. Otherwise, I doubt that it has any effect
A successful Wharton transfer here. Wharton loves quant people so that will certainly help. Hype up your math interest and apply to their new concentration in business analytics. Transfer admissions is so much based around filling holes in the current undergraduate class and Wharton wants more quant people to do business analytics. If you are really serious about getting in then make sure you get as close to a 4.0 as you can your first semester, and I’d advise you to take some sort of english class and do well to show you can critically read.
If you get in you can double major in CS in addition to the Wharton BS in econ… but don’t. You’ll have to do two separate sets of requirements for SEAS and Wharton and honestly the Wharton degree is enough. Just do concentrations in OIDD, STAT, and FNCE and you’ll be more then prepared for any roles in finance.
