In senior year of High School, as I was applying to college. I came across Binghampton University. Being from NY, this seemed like a good SUNY school to apply to.

Not knowing how good it really was, as i had a notion that SUNY schools werent as good as Private Institutions, I did not attend and instead went to Northeastern University.

After a year of Northeastern University, majoring in Economics, I had a GPA of 2.1. Graduating with Honors with a 4.0 GPA in High School, Top 10% with an ACT of 27, a 2.1 GPA in college was unacceptable for me.

However, serious extenuating circumstances in my family had caused my downward spiral of my GPA. Moreover, I strongly disliked Northeastern.

Now as i finished my first year, I will be starting my second year at Northeastern. However because I dislike the school, it is expensive, and my GPA was terrible. I want to transfer back to Binghamton. I know that this year i can easily get above a 3.0 GPA, possibly above a 3.5.

My question is:
Is it possible I can get reaccepted into Binghampton, despite everything that happened above?

I believe it’s possible if you ask an adcom if previous admission to the university matters, and then I would write a letter about the extenuating circumstances to go along with your application. Just out of curiosity, are you planning to transfer for the spring, or fall 2010?

What Perfectedxchaos suggests is definitely worth a shot. It probably doesn’t hurt to at least apply.

The potential problem is that with any meaningful amount of university coursework, adcoms are generally going to weigh that more heavily than your high school record. They will hopefully consider extenuating circumstances, but they still want proof that you can succeed at the university level.

All is not lost if you don’t get in on the first shot. You only have one year of college. If you had to, you could do your second year at a community college and get your GPA up and then apply again. Then, between your second year of university and your high school record, your year at Northeastern would hopefully look like a fluke. This would also be much cheaper than staying at Northeastern. Why pay huge amounts of money to go to a school you don’t even like?

Do you feel that your family problems are really resolved and that you’re ready to go back to university and do well? If not, you might consider taking some time off until you’re really ready to go back and excel. It would look better to take some time off than to continue to add C’s (or worse) to your transcript. Your situation isn’t hopeless, but you don’t have any more room for error here.

Community colleges are also generally better places to step back and regroup than four-year universities. Community colleges tend to be supportive, flexible environments.

To Perfectedxchaos, I will be applying for Spring 2010 and Fall 2010, if I do not get accepted in Spring.

To Take3, I am willing to pay huge amounts of money to attend a school I dislike because of the name of the school. I got accepted and now that my GPA is in the dumps, I am glad I am at least stuck in a school with a good reputation as opposed to downgrading reputations.

My family problems are also completely gone. I am really ready to go back and excel. I just hope adcoms understand that. (or jobs and/or graduate schools)
