Transferring after 1st year

I’m currently a freshman at UCSD and I’m not really liking any aspect of it. During my senior year in high school, I was focused on getting into a liberal arts school, such as Amherst, Wesleyan, Brown, etc.

My first choice was Brown and really unsurprisingly, I was rejected.

I didn’t find out about Barnard until after I graduated when I was visiting NYC over the summer. I love how it’s still a small school but with Columbia resources close by.

But the thing is I really want to double major, perhaps neuroscience and communications/marketing/PR etc (I’m currently undeclared) and I know Barnard doesn’t have a communications major?

I know UCSD is pretty good at neuroscience/cogsci but my experience so far has been abysmal. I was also so home sick during the first few weeks. I think I was more home sick in that I didn’t really miss home but because I didn’t feel like SD was that welcoming.

My high school stats were subpar: 31 ACT 3.6 ish UW GPA. I have pretty good ec’s though.
As for now, I hope my college GPA will be at least a 3.5 at the end of the quarter-I’m taking chem, math, an intro to cogsci and required writing class. I’m taking math/chem because I’m also considering a premed route. How difficult would it be to double major and take premed prereqs?

How hard is it to transfer as a sophomore as compared to a junior?

I really regret not applying when I was a senior in high school…

My sister teaches at UCSD and both of my daughters went (go) to Barnard. I can see the differences although I love both institutions for different reasons.
Not liking your school in October is very common. Most people have changed their minds by Christmas and are happy with their original choice.
Individual attention is easier to get at Barnard, but it still requires some initiative on your part to get it. UCSD is a more spacious campus but is therefore a little harder to get around. Barnard on the other hand is very urban. The housing is different. I could be happy at either school.
As to your double major with premed recs, this may be difficult if there is not a little overlap. One of my daughters is taking a film major with a science minor and can just fit in the premed if she wants to go to Europe for a semester. This may be a little tight.
