Hi, I'm about to attend a university which accepts 4's and 5's for AP scores and as such I'm going to get a lot of transferable credits there. However, I hope to transfer to another school (Upenn being one choice) after 1 or 2 years which only accepts 5's on AP tests (for the most part). If I successfully transfer, will I get to keep the credits I already earned at my first university through AP's?

The AP credits were converted into credit hours for the equivalent courses at my previous university. When I transfer to another university, the credit hours I got for each classes with AP credit were transferred as class credits that were equivalent to the new university.

Basically: AP Credit -> Class credit hours at University A -> Class credit hours at University B

I’m not sure how the schools you are transferring to will process your AP scores. You may have to contact the school itself to verify.

Each place sets its own policy about this. So yes, it is entirely possible to lose a bunch of credits when you transfer if the new institution does not accept all of your AP scores for credit or placement. Once you are accepted as a transfer student, you can ask specifically about the evaluation of your AP credit/placement when you ask about how the rest of your transcript will be evaluated.

How about kind of the reverse situation? Suppose a high school student does well on AP exams, but goes to, say, Dartmouth, which gives no credit for AP exams. Then after one year this hypothetical student transfers to, say, the U of Nebraska, which is pretty generous about giving out credit for AP exams. Can this student get AP credits when applying as a transfer?
