Transferring FROM a four year university?

After much thought about this I've been considering transferring to Cal State Pomona. As of now I'll be going to Humboldt State University and stay for 2 years.
I finally realized that I want to pursue a career in landscape architecture, however HSU doesn't offer the program but Pomona does.
How is the transfer process?
Should I take classes that are required in landscape architecture?
Would it still take four years to finish?

So you’ve been going to a 4 year university for the past 2 years, and you want to switch to another 4 year university? Just want to see if I understand it.

No, I just graduated high school thinking I’ll be studying a certain major, but changed my mind later on. Im going to be a freshman at HSU and plan to stay for two years and get enough credits to transfer.
Sorry if it wasn’t too clear.

Hmm. So you haven’t actually started college yet? Are you already locked in on your tuition or something?

Yeah, everything is set. Got my financial aid package accepted.

Here is what you could do:
See if you can get out of your college agreement somehow. I think that should be pretty easy considering classes haven’t started yet. But you may not get your housing deposit etc. back. Then apply and see if you can get admitted for the Spring.

BUT if you aren’t sure you wouldn’t change your mind again (or if it’s just 2 expensive to go to your architecture school for 4 years) then try out the original school and see how it goes. You might discover you like something else entirely.

However, don’t go into one school and expect to take classes for architecture there and them transfer over to another. The more specialized the classes, the harder they are to transfer. Trust me, from someone who is about to transfer to her 4th college.

I would talk to the school you really want to go to and ask them about how credits transfer. Show them the school you are in right now and ask them to specifically tell you which credits will transfer without a problem. If you can’t actually speak with somebody, then try to stick with core classes that would be required for all majors. However these can vary a lot between different fields. English and Biology for instance. Some schools have about the same for all majors, but some don’t. You really need to try to figure that out, or you’ll end up like me and end up with 5 different literatures just to satisfy the different requirements. So I would stick with English 101 and 102, History, Math, Science, etc. It is going to be REALLY boring, which is why I would just try to get into the other school to begin with, or as soon as possible.

Unless you plan this really carefully, it is probably gonna be more than 4 years. Just because you’ll end up with credits that won’t transfer, or credits that only count as electives but not for your requirements, etc. And you could take EN 101 at your first school, then get to your 2nd school and they say they don’t accept any others, you have to take THEIRS. So you have to take it all over again, wasting money and time. I’m fighting that battle for the 3rd time, and it’s not fun. So look at the school you want to go to, and try to figure out how everything transfers. They usually have a section on their website. Oh and it is much more likely to transfer if it is in the same state.

Thanks for the advice. That helped a lot!

Let us know how it goes! Oh and be prepared for a buttload of paperwork and meetings. . .
