Transferring From an Extension School?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently a Senior in high school and I'm trying to decide where to go for college. The three schools that I was admitted to are USC (as a Presidential Scholar), UC Berkeley (but for Spring 2012), and NYU. I'm very happy about the schools that I got into, but I also would like to do better, so I want to apply to better schools (ie Harvard, Yale, and Stanford) next year as a transfer.

My question is, is it harder to transfer out of the UC Berkeley Fall Program for Freshmen? Since I was admitted for the Spring semester, I would be spending my Fall term next year taking classes in the Berkeley Extension building, which isn't technically Berkeley itself. Would the colleges that I'd be applying to look down on that? Would I be better served being a full-time student at a less prestigious school like USC?

Is it also easier to transfer to another private university from a private university like NYU than a large, public school like UC Berkeley?

These questions are all very difficult to answer as I’m sure not one of us has a set correct answer…all we have are opinions.

My opinion, and I will say this until kingdom come, is to enroll at the school you feel is the best fit. Who knows, you could really love it there. Also, Berkeley is a great school, and even better if you are getting in-state tuition (except I don’t know what its like now with the near collapse of the UC system). USC is also wonderful. I think you have some great options ahead

By the way, you will need a really compelling case to transfer. I feel that most of these schools offer similar opportunities. Far greater than some others.

Thanks a lot for your thoughts! I know I’d probably be happy at any of these great schools, but I want to keep my options open and make an informed decision. I’m only wondering because I kind of slacked off during high school, and I realize now that if I had worked at it, I could have done better. So I want another chance to prove myself by keeping the option of transferring open. I’d just like to get as many opinions as possible on the issue, since picking a college to go to is kind of a huge decision :P
