I'm currently a first year student at MHC and I find myself a bit disappointed with the student body here as well the lack of resources available to students on campus. I want to transfer because I feel like Smith is better for me in terms of achieving my future goals of going to graduate school and finding internships. I also feel that the student body at Smith is much friendlier than the student body at Mount Holyoke and that I would be more academically challenged at Smith.

On your “Why Smith?” essay, make sure your reasons are both compelling and concrete since the adcom will expect you to have a greater knowledge of Smith than other transfer applicants do. For instance, why do you expect to be more academically challenged at Smith? What resources does Smith have that Mount Holyoke doesn’t?

" I want to transfer because I feel like Smith is better for me in terms of achieving my future goals of going to graduate school and finding internships."

“…and that I would be more academically challenged at Smith.”

While people on this site…and on this thread…may agree with you on these points, I think the Smith administration is not likely to agree with you – unless there is a particular academic major or concentration offered at Smith that is not offered at MHC.

You will need to concentrate on why you think Smith is a better fit for you, and, as stated in post #2, the specific resources available to you at Smith that haven’t be available at MHC.

I would agree, in your essay you should be as specific as possible. “The student body is friendlier” doesn’t really cut it. First, because I’m pretty sure it should be “more friendly,” and second because honestly, Mt. Holyoke girls are very friendly and the admissions officers aren’t going to think of Smithies as being necessarily superior in their friendliness. Of course, maybe you gave these reasons just as a general posting thing and you don’t plan on using them in the essay, in which case disregard.

Have you taken classes at Smith yet or spent a lot of time there? Do you have a specific idea of how to take advantage of specific resources that Smith offers that aren’t available at Moho? I’m not trying to discourage you, just make sure you’ve thought this through carefully.

But to answer your first question, yes, Moho women transfer to Smith and Smith women also transfer to Moho. So it definitely does happen.

honestly, write about something specific. what makes smith unique? i am probably going to get into a lot of trouble with saying this, but the purpose of those “why do you want to go to [x-school]?” is really just to kiss some admission behinds. ;] at this point, they know you want to go to grad school, but so do half of the other applicants. just try to think about why smith specifically is better for you than mhc and go from there. PERHAPS it is the social aspect, even if smith is an academic institution, y’know? who knows?
