Transferring from Northeastern to Cc to a 4 year

I finished my freshman year at Northeastern with a 2.42 and I’m wondering if I can transfer to cc to improve my grades and transfer to another 4 year. I figured I’d save a lot of money and get into a better school in the long run. However I’m worried if I transfer my 34 credits to cc I will only have a year to improve my grades before I get my associates degree. I don’t think this would be enough time to get grades sufficient enough to get into a better school. So should I stay at Northeastern and improve my grades, or go to Cc?

If you have a 2.42 GPA at Northeastern, what makes you think you can get into a “better” school? A more competitive school would be even more demanding in the classroom, where your GPA shows that you do not excel.

Why is your GPA so mediocre? Partying? You were unprepared for college level work? Depression?

@TomSrOfBoston A close friend died the 3rd month of my first semester. I never saw any mental health professional about it so I don’t know if I was depressed or not. All I know was I was sad all the time and I didn’t feel like getting out of bed anymore. My goal is to raise my gpa at cc and then attempt to transfer into a better school.

You should have sought counseling, perhaps you should still. If you are seeking to transfer to a more selective school after cc, that 2.42 will make it very difficult. Community college classes are generally easier than university classes, so anything less than a 4.0 at cc will limit your chances even more.

If you explain your situation as “extenuating circumstances” on the application and that you did not seek counseling, that may raise a red flag to them.

@TomSrOfBoston I was under the assumption that with a 4.0 that gpa could come up. But I’m thinking that if I transfer my credits from Northeastern, My GPA will not go up significantly up to transfer to a more selective school, before I’ve completed enough credits to get my associate’s degree. So would you recommend I stick it out at Northeastern and attempt to get better grades here?

Getting a 4.0 at a community college is not impressive if you want to transfer to a highly selective school, especially given your poor GPA freshman year If you stay at Northeastern and get a high GPA this year then that will show another school that you can do the work and that freshman year was a fluke due to your emotional crisis. BTW, I still recommend counseling to help you understand what happened to you and to learn ways to avoid such a reaction in the future.

Just stay at Northeastern. You aren’t likely to transfer to anywhere better. If you don’t like he school, then fine transfer somewhere at a similar or lesser level.

Stay at Northeastern. Take summer school classes in another school to build up your GPA if you want. And take easy classes and STUDY.

I think it’s best to stay at Northeastern, and see if you can make up any bad grades (D’s or F’s). Talk to a counselor about any options you have for academic renewal, and make sure to do well these following terms to bring up your GPA.

If you need a break to allow yourself time to heal (which it seems you do), perhaps you should take gap semester/year. It’s a good idea to do so if you feel that you won’t be able to do well from here on out, and if you think that, after the gap, you will be able to perform well.

Totally up to you, though. Again, talk to a counselor about your options.
