Transferring out of Boston University

I'm a freshman at BU. I'm majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I plan to go to grad school right away and get my PhD and go into research. BU wasn't my first choice school, Dartmouth was. I was actually really excited about coming to Boston. But after spending a semester here, I don't know how much I like it. I don't know if I want to transfer though. Things i don't like about Boston: being in a city, not knowing what to do other than shop and party (neither of which im really into), being so far away from home (which i've mostly gotten over actually). The biggest thing I don't like about Boston is the city aspect. The things that are keeping me here are my major and the academic program. BU is a really good school for research and I'm positive that I want to do research.

Should I look into transferring? I'm afraid to ask any of my friends back home because they all want me to live closer to home and I don't want that to play into my decision. I want it to be based off what I want and whether I'll fit in and find good academics, not that my friends want to see me more often.

I know this might not be your first option but I would say you should look into transferring for Fall 2009 just to keep your options open. You probably don’t want to reach fall semester and be saying that you wish you were somewhere else and then have to stick it out a whole other semester.
Good luck!
Don’t let your friends try to affect your decision. Do what is best for you at this time in your life!

It doesn’t seem like you’re terribly unhappy. I would say stick it out. Are you working in a lab yet? If not, contact some professors and see if you can get into one, since that is really what you want to do. It might just make you want to stay in Boston. Not to mention, Boston is a major research center. You could try to contact researchers outside of BU.
