I’m hoping to transfer to Georgetown from Cornell University for the fall of 2015 and was wondering if anybody could share their experiences with transferring to Georgetown or possibly a friend’s experience transferring here. For instance, was it a smooth transition socially? Was it easy to make new friends or do people generally socialize with friends from freshman year? How was your overall experience and are you happy with your decision?
I love the size, location, and Jesuit tradition of Georgetown and truly feel that this school is the best fit for me. I don’t regret my time at Cornell, but I am thankful that it led me to new realizations about my desires, ambitions, and needs. I’m just hoping to gain some insight from current students at Georgetown who have transferred there or know of someone else who has. Thank you in advance!
Hello Rebekah101 -
I am the parent of a student who transferred to Georgetown this past fall for his sophomore year - and he couldn’t be happier. His transition was a smooth one and he made friends quickly. He is an outgoing guy which helps of course, but in general he found Georgetown students to be very welcoming. As parents we appreciated the inclusion of all transfers in the freshman convocation ceremony and the support from the administration. He now has friends among other transfers, from a club sport he plays and from his classes. He also tranferred from an Ivy - and hasn’t looked back. Good luck to you! If you have specific questions I could ask him to contact you - although he is very busy, which of course makes his parents happy!
Looking to transfer to Georgetown from another private school in DC. Is there any chance at all?
Thank you so much centraleagle!! Your response made me feel a lot better about the transfer and transition. I am so glad it worked out for your son! Hopefully I’ll be rooting on the Hoyas next year too. Thanks again!
@Rebekah101 I transferred to Georgetown from American University, and I was overall pretty pleased with my decision to transfer. Georgetown does make an attempt to welcome transfer students–we get our own Orientation schedule and leaders, we have access to transfer-only events, and transfers are definitely an intentional population here (fun fact: 8 of the last 10 Georgetown valedictorians have been transfers). They could be doing more, like housing us all on the same floors so we have that same kind of freshman-floor feeling again, but overall it’s not bad. Social life at Georgetown is really done through clubs, though. Almost all my friends are through the clubs I’m in.
This isn’t to say that I didn’t have some nights early on where I had nothing to do and no one to do it with. But by early November of last semester I’d say I had found my social footing. People here are pretty rad. Also, DC kicks ass–the reason I transferred to Georgetown from AU is that I didn’t want to leave DC behind.
I’ve tried finding more info on how selective MSB is in the transfer process compared to the other schools at GT, but there isn’t much in terms of solid examples. Anyone have experience/know what’s specifically different about transferring into MSB as it’s quickly becoming a more prestigious and internationally recognized undergrad b-school?
@Jacob4815162342 As far as I know, there isn’t any reason to believe that it’s harder to get into the MSB as a transfer than a freshman when compared to the other schools. For freshmen, the College accepts 17% of folks, the SFS 19%, and the MSB 16.2%. That’s all pretty close, so I wouldn’t worry too much about it. As for what’s specifically different, your application must of course reflect your interest in business. Experience in investments and finance would of course have more weight than MUN; your resume will probably be more scrutinized than it would be for other applicants
