Transferring to USC after one year from MSU?? (Pre-Med)

Hello,
So this may be long, but I am stuck. After one year at MSU, I got my place in a research lab and a volunteering placement at a hospital. USC accepted me after one year, so I’d enter as a sophomore. I am currently entering as a human bio major and I would also like to minor in something (I’ve been thinking neuroscience or business). I had applied before I got the research and volunteering placements at MSU, and I don’t know what I should do. I am pre-med by the way, and I am a hard worker. I would like to get in to med school immediately after college. I am pretty sure USC’s classes are more rigorous, but I don’t know what the best move is to make.

MSU???

Michigan State University
Montana State University
Missouri State University

Are there any other MSUs?

I am so sorry. Michigan State University

Sorry- Michigan State University

Mississippi State University is another one.

OP, are you happy where you are? It certainly sounds like you are well established. I can’t speak to the opportunities you already have and how important they are (they seem important) or how hard they are to get at USC, because I am not familiar with med school specifics, I have engineers.

What I do know, is the perfect school at one point in time, may not be the perfect school a year later. I have 3 at USC, so I am a Trojan faithful, however, one of my 4 had the same opportunity - to come in as a sophomore part of the TTP, but didn’t take it. It was the dream school the year before (don’t like that term but it was), but a year later, she had moved on. It happens. You have to decide if going to USC will help you move forward more than where you are now. It might or might not.

Aside from what you have now (the volunteer assignment) what does one school offer more than the other in pre-med?

Sorry, I can’t address the med school side, I can just give you things to think about. But there are a lot of great posters on here that will likely jump in who really know med school stuff. Calling knower of everything medschool, @mom2collegekids, can you help here?

@cadreamin Thank you for your input it means a lot. Well, one school (USC) offers the minors I’m interested in and maybe could help with connections because of their strong alumni. Michigan State doesn’t offer that much in that retrospect, but if I continue there it will be easier to finish my studies.

Bet you graduate with less debt at Mich State. That’s worth more going in to med school than alumni connections.

“Sorry- Michigan State University”
“I am pre-med by the way”

You need to budget for 8 years of university. If Michigan State is less expensive, and you got a “place in a research lab and a volunteering placement at a hospital”, then my inclination would be to stay where you are. It sounds to me as if you are doing very well.

You also need a very good GPA for medical school?

Can you tell us what the numbers look like (both cost and GPA)?

@DadTwoGirls Currently I have a 3.7 GPA (from my one year at Michigan State University); For medical school, you need a 3.5 in order to be considered competitive. The tuition at USC is around 52,000 and at MSU it is 14,000.

I’ve heard of USC connections helping people get jobs, but never to get into medical school.
