I'm currently a freshman at SMU majoring Computer Science. As of late I have felt that not only is SMU's environment not for me, but their program is not for me either, integrating their creative computing program with the CS program. As a result I've started to look into transferring to other schools and the one I'm currently looking at is UTD. I'm from Plano so I know the campus pretty well and my girlfriend is there as well and I've visited pretty often.

The few questions I have are about scholarships and overall advice. At SMU I'm paying ~17k a year and I know at UTD even with just the Comet Transfer Scholarship I'd be paying ~20k, but are there any other notable ones I would be considered for such as the AES? Is getting in as a transfer pretty hard? Since I wouldn't have completed a semester by the time my application is processed will they be looking at my high school records to make a decision more than my college records? Lastly, if I'm receiving financial aid from SMU will UTD attempt or even consider giving me similar aid to assist with the costs or is it strictly going to be up to scholarships that I apply for?

Just as a note, SAT CR+M: 1480, ACT: 34, Top 17%

You should talk to admissions at UTD. If you are applying as a freshman, you would have gotten tuition free + a good chunk of money in AES but not sure if they give any money to transfers, especially after 1 semester.

I can’t remember if I did or if I just decided not to. I just talked with admissions and they said I won’t be eligible for AES, which really sucks. Either way I’m not too concerned since the cost of admission is pretty low already, and if I can do well this semester the comet transfer scholarship might lower it down to ~19k which is almost what I’m paying already.

You will not be eligible for the Comet Transfer Scholarship if you have less than 30 hours at the time of admission.

Are you applying for Spring 2014? Have you completed the application? If not, get started!

The Spring 2014 FA deadline was October 15. You can still apply for the FAFSA, but it will not be processed until you are admitted.

The admission process takes 4 to 6 weeks to get an admission dec on a complete application. The 4- 6 weeks starts when the application and all supporting docs are submitted.

The admission office host events that will waive the application fee and give info. Preview Friday (10/25 and 11/15) and Scholars Day (11/16). It is a fee waiver not a refund. Complete the application, request fee expt as form of payment. the application fee will not slow down your application processing.

Hope it helps let me know if you have questions

Yeah, I applied last Friday and already had my High School Transcripts/ACT/SAT sent to them. I already have FAFSA at SMU, but I don’t know how that applies to UTD if I need to do anything for it or not. I put UTD as a school who could see my FAFSA last year when I was applying since I was considering going to UTD last year but never actually applied.

Also, as texasrpg mentioned, I was considering not living on campus as it would cut down room and board. Would it completely cut it down to 0 (If my parents pay for my living expenses at hom), or is there something in there that I still have to pay for?

Texaspg is correct, if you do not live on campus you will not have any fees assoc with oncampus living. Tution, fees, books, commute cost and/or parking permit. UTD students get a free Dart pass if you really want to cut down on costs. However, you mention 19k likes its nothing so I am guessing you are doing alright…

You need to update your 2013-2014 FAFSA to inculde UTD. UTD School code is 009741. UTD will not touch your FAFSA untill you are an admitted student.

May I transfer my financial aid from my old school to UT Dallas?
Your financial aid does not transfer from one school to another. UT Dallas must receive your FAFSA information to determine what types of aid you may receive. You may be eligible for some of the same types of aid you received at your previous school.
