Transferring to UVA

Hello, I'm a sophomore at Ithaca College. My current major is journalism. I'm a Pennsylvania resident (not sure how much of a factor out-of-state is for transfers) However, I've decided that I might rather do something with the stock market, like investment banking. I pretty much have eliminated journalism as a possible career field and was just going to finish out the degree and go to law school. But now, I think I might rather pursue an MBA or joint JD/MBA program. So I decided business undergrad might be the better way to go. While IC's journalism program is very strong, the business program isn't so strong. One of my problems as you will see is my lack of gen ed courses, mathematics courses, accounting courses, and business courses, although I do have some economics courses. IC doesn't require gen ed for their journalism program and let you jump right into the major as a freshman. Anyways, I'm just gong to post my stats + EC's and see what you think my chances are of (A) getting in? (B) getting into the business school after a semester? (C) getting academic aid?

If you were simply attempting to transfer into arts and sciences I would say you have a pretty good chance at transferring. Admission to the commerce school relies heavily on grades in commerce related coursework (ie Econ, Accounting), your grades in econ are good but your lack of other courses will probably hurt you. You will want to apply into McIntire when you apply to transfer. They do not accept transfers after only a semester you would have to wait a full year. If you were to wait a year, you would not be able to graduate on time.

I can't say specifically what your chances will be you seem like you would be a competative applicant though. Being out of state will significantly decrease your chances. Best of luck to you and hopefully someone else can comment on your chances at receiving financial aid.

Toph, as a transfer student, your college grades are much more important than your high school grades. A 3.7 is pretty good (though I don't know how much grade inflation Ithaca has). All I know is a 3.7 is pretty tough to get at UVa.

As for your 2nd question, to get into the McIntire School of Commerce, you will need to have completed a number of prerequisite classes. Those classes are listed here in this link:
<a href="http://www.commerce.virginia.edu/admissions/undergraduate/prerequisites.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.commerce.virginia.edu/admissions/undergraduate/prerequisites.html</a></p>

Here's some other general info that you should know:
<a href="http://www.commerce.virginia.edu/admissions/undergraduate/application_process/transfer%20students.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.commerce.virginia.edu/admissions/undergraduate/application_process/transfer%20students.html</a></p>

If you have further questions, email: Commerce-Admissions@virginia.edu. They should be able to answer all your other questions.

This semester, I've signed up to take Calc II, Financial Accounting, and Intro to Business. I'm also trying to get into a full Stats course.

So that would leave me with only needing Managerial Accounting. Hopefully that could be taken over the summer.

If that is the case then they may offer you admission to the university and waitlist you for the comm. school. After they receive your grades for those classes then they would make a decision. This is definately something that you would want to contact them about to find out all the details.

I am not even in uva, but i applied for engineering. i have already decided that i am going to transfer to some science major. my question 1) is ti going to be hard to transfer? 2) what major do i take to prepare myself for mcats and so i go to medical school?

Bumping this up... I ended up with a 3.46 for the semester and a 3.684 cumulative... I've gone 3.81, 3.74, 3.46. However the difference between the 1st and 2nd was a B+ and a B and getting an A- in a 4 credit class instead of a 3. On the 3rd semester, I just ended up on the wrong side of the A-/B+ line getting 1 A, 3 B+'s, and a pass (lifeguarding). Also, they told me as long as I was short no more than 4 pre-req's, I could make them up over the summer. (I'm nervous that my financial accounting course won't count since Ithaca's business program isn't accredited, of course this lack of accreditation is one of my reasons for wanting to leave). Are my chances out the window due to the declining GPA?
