How do freshmen get to campus from the airport? Does UNC run a bus? Taxi's?

I’m pretty sure there is a bus system!

[Town of Chapel Hill : Transit](Transit | Town of Chapel Hill, NC)

[Home — Triangle Transit](http://www.triangletransit.org/)

Also, the University offers shuttle service to and from the airport and train station during holiday breaks, etc.

1) For about $30-40 bucks you can take the supershuttle, usually other students might be on the same shuttle too…especially for breaks
2) For $2 (ask for a transfer since you will be taking another bus), you can take the 100 bus (green…i think) (the bus stop is actually near where the other transportation shuttles are…ask someone if you are at the correct stop) and it will drop you off at a transit center where other buses are…and you will get on the 800 bus (green) to campus. But the bus will not drop you off in front of your dorm like the shuttle does. google triangle transit
3) look for another taxi service that offers discounts but the lowest I’ve ever gotten was to like $30.

I usually take the bus because it is way cheaper and I only have one luggage. It usually takes like 7 minutes to walk from where it dropped me to my dorm.

How far away is the airport? Since most kids are from North Carolina, do they have cars on campus? I assume the drive to and from home?

It’s not a suitcase school by any means. My parents were in Greensboro (45 min away) my first year, but I only went home one weekend aside from breaks. I didn’t have a car the entire time I wad at UNC and I was fine; the bus system is great.

As cloying said, the bus system is pretty good for getting around Chapel Hill/Carrboro. But if you want to go a bit further, you will probably be using a car.

I’ve never had a problem. There are lots of options. By the way, SuperShuttle announced that they are no longer serving Raleigh Durham Airport effective March 4th 2012.

Here are other options:

1) The P2P services are available through UNC’s Department of Public Safety and Student Government. For this past spring break, the P2P Shuttles picked students up from the airport every hour from 2:00 p.m. through 10:00 p.m. on March 11th for the return to campus. Students DO NOT need to sign up for a time to get on a shuttle back to campus, but will need to show their UNC card. Free!

2) Raleigh-Durham Airport for Taxis (RDU). I frequently run into UNC students I know at the airport and we’ll split a cab back to campus.

3) Triangle Transit Authority (TTA) – goes to RDU, Amtrak Stations, and Greyhound Bus Stations. $2 Cheap and easy. I often take this to the airport, especially when I only have carry ons

4) UNC Zimride, a private ridesharing network for UNC is a fun and easy way to catch a ride or share the seats in a car. UNC Zimride helps students offer or request rides for commutes, events and road trips. If a student has a car, they can help split costs by offering rides to fellow Carolina students. If a student doesn’t have a car, this service will help find rides to where they need to go.

Yep the airport is easy. But if you want to go to a bar, restaurant or a show in Durham, Raleigh, Pittsboro, Hillsborough, or Saxapahaw, then you are going to have to take a private car. Especially if it’s in the evening.

For things like keepittoyourself said, you can rent a Zipcar for a period of time. Not super cheap if you’re broke but it’s a good way to get around if you need it for a special occasion.

what if you come in by train? Is the TTA the easiest way to get to campus or a cab?

The closest Amtrak station to UNC is in Durham. The station is about 10 miles away from the university. Either cab or Triangle Transit bus would be fine. However, Triangle Transit would require a transfer (be sure to ask for one). The closest bus stop is #6381 at W. Main at the Amtrak Station. Get on the Bull City Connector bus heading eastbound and get off at stop #5774 Durham Station. Then take the 400 Triangle Transit bus toward Chapel Hill. That bus goes into the UNC campus (down Franklin Street). Pretty easy …

Great. Thank you. We may take the train to visit. Sounds simple enough.
